they totally underestimated the local campaigner's level of resistance and capicity to build an effective campaign. they had to back down from the high court injunction due to bad PR and when they had total legal and political backing, never mind that they are a very rich multi-national corporation with endless resources and influencing power.

Mr Pyle said that the only way the controversial project could continue was with the partnership of local people.

this is defo a cynical PR stunt. they didn't go near the locals for their opinions when they were setting about the project in the first instance, never mind those who's land they were compulsorily purchasing a part of for peanuts.

should be interesting to see what happens in the next few weeks. they'll be anxious to resume construction very soon as they can't do it when the weather starts getting bad up there.

Are the compulsory purchase orders going through the government? I was under the impression there's good money in that, unless they'd planned on selling off the land for building?

The govt are the only ones who can compulsary purchase. Normally they only do it for roads and stuff that if 'for the public good'. They made an exception for shell it seems.

Think they didn't get much money coz they didn't question it. They totally trusted what was going on and thought the gas coming ashore would be great. It was only when one family asked a few questions it all started coming out. They had no idea it was at such high pressure or could be dangerous or anything til 6 years ago. Then it was ages again til anyone listened to them, not til the Rossport 5 went to prison really.

in 2002 the legislation regarding compulsory purchase orders was changed to allow the minister for communication, marine and natural resources to obtain land by compulsory purchase on behalf of private companies. the original orders were for strips of land, running through various properties. what came out in court was that the land being paid for didn't allow for the cutting away of earth either side of these strips to facilitate the laying of the pipeline. the land in question is agricultural land that through generations of land management have been turned into arible land from bog. if the soil is disrupted the land goes back to its bog state and is therefore useless for agriculture. can't remember the exact prices paid but basicly it did not cover the land being destroyed, which was about twice the area of the land being bought.

edit: good info in the cpi report on the corrib process and legislative history here http://www.publicinquiry.ie/reports.php

If you watch the Shell ads on Euronews they seem like the nicest bunch of hippies ever.

As for compulsory purchase, my dad got some money for the gas line. They took about a 15' x 40' stretch of a field for a few months, then covered it all up and now it looks just as it did before.
I saw the cheque he got, and it seemed to me like a lot of money, considering he was getting paid for use of a bit of a field for a few months, but he wasn't happy with the amount at all.
The land was bogland 70 years ago, and I don't think it's been damaged at all by the process.
