Rings is Nina Mehta, Abby Portner and Kate Rosko - three women who live and play in New York City. The three came together when Abby (sister to Dave, aka Animal Collective’s Avey Tare) joined in June of 2006, after Nina and Kate and former member Melissa Livaudais released an album and seven inch under the name First Nation. The three girls started writing new material, and continued to play under the name First Nation, until they recorded their new album Black Habit in Rove Studios in Kentucky with Kristin Anna Valtysdottir aka Kria Brekken (formerly of the band Múm). The record was going to be called Rings, but then they decided that “Rings” described them as a band more so than First Nation. First Nation became Rings.
Black Habit delivers in a major way. Rings have developed their own style; a loose tribal pop sound that thrives on vocal harmonies and pulsating drum rhythms. Black Habit’s energy is full of beauty, elegance and simplicity. The new name represents the group in many ways: the group’s circular compositions, the bonds between them, their decision-making processes, and their feminine beliefs, interlocking, connected, whole, and continuous. Rings are inspired by lots of different music, like folk, hip hop and r ‘n’ b, and traditional and pop music from their own city and farther lands

Dublin-based Thread Pulls are now stripped back to the duo of Peter Maybury & Gavin Duffy. Never known to stick to one style, Thread pulls have made a complete u-turn sound-wise discarding their customary off-kilter motoriks and feedback drones for a new upbeat trip.
“built from feedback, dissonant chops and reedy vocals that put one in mind of Thurston Moore traversing a tar pit.” - The Wire
