okay folks just got me a shiney new 2.16 GHZ,it's only got 1GB of RAM though,do i need to up grade to 3GB?
can anyone suggest a good
audio interface?
a good external hard drive? (i've heard firewire s the way to go?)
a good set of headphones?

Garage Band is actually very good. It comes across as being simple at first but there is a lot to it. A lot of the techniques fall under different names, e.g. No cross fading exactly but it has an option where you can join section together.

Depends what level of recording you're into doing.

You can go the protools/logic route in which case you'll need more hardware and more ram. If it's for basic recording at home then GarageBand is very good, like ProTools Lite or something. Makes relatively low demands on your machine too. I have 1GB ram on a G4 and GarageBand has never had any problems.

well i was looking to run logic pro 7, i studied engineering in the TBMC a few years ago so i understand the nuts and bolts of audio recordng but i'm well out of the loop gear wise, looking to record "releaseable" quality tunes

Start small, work from there.
No point in going out and blowing a huge chunk of cash straight away.

If you're going with logic, you need to figure out what interface you want.
Make a list!

Figure out what you need from the interface..
  1. How many inputs
  2. How many of those need to be mic preamps
  3. How many outputs
  4. What kind of monitoring control
  5. What other shit
Make a list of the interfaces that'll do that, as well as play nice with Logic, then google the shit outta the two or three you like the look of best.

As far as hard drives go, there piss all difference between firewire and usb. Either should be fine. Lots of external HD's do both.

Can't say that I know a lot about headphones.
