i'm a total technophobe.
ma has all these videos of us since we were babies and stuff (so we're talking some being 24 years old), and before their quality is compromised, i'd love to find out if there's a way for her to put them onto dvd. is this possible?

Someone posted up a link (maybe not here) which showed average lifespan of a VHS tape to be 28 years. DVD-R was 8 years. Stored under optimum conditions.

well, yes, but the point is you get it off that ratty old analogue tape and into the eternal digital world of the modren day. Once it's digital it's always digital, so you can move those bits and bytes around different storage media (dvd-r to hard drive to holocube and back again etc) with no subsequent loss of quality, innit.

i use a DV Bridge (one of these, but there are probably better / newer one's now) which allows me to pull in video from almost any crappy old source as PAL DV, which is about 20GB/hour. I can then convert it to whatever format I want (currently DVD-R & divx).

Takes fucking ages.

I use quicktime h.264 instead of DivX now, if at all possible. So much nicer.
