I have an mp3 player which is not mac compatible and I'm trying to play music from it through the mac. The audio is going in through the line in but I cannot get audio to play out through the internal speaker although I can see the audio levels coming through. The sound pref settings are set to Input - Line-in and Output - Internal Speaker. Is there something I'm doing wrong or is this not actually possible?

ah, there you are!

Occurred to me while i was being sarcastic back there, is there any prob with the G4? have you checked that sound plays back on the G4 (sound from it's own HD...) is the G4 connected to ext. speakers or just the internal/onboard ones? what are the other options in the sound output prefs? Is there a level or mute control for the line in that may be turned down?

Otherwise what you're doing sounds fine.

Beleive me I've tried every available option in the sound prefs. Music plays fine through the internal speaker. I have tons more music on the mp3 player but not enough hard disc space to put it onto the mac hence trying to do it this way. I've tried connecting external speakers and can see the audio level coming in but still nothing. ???

hello,
i don't think the mac will let you do that without some fancy extra software. best to google for some free software, or check the software links on the apple site.

i'll have a quick dig and see if there's anything....

I can't think what the problem could be. It must be something really simple and obvious. There's no way you'd need extra software for that.

i may have fallen into the old trap of think that if i haven't seen it, it doesn't exist.

so, according to apple, if you plug something into the line-in on a g4 it will mute the speakers. however, you might try plugging in and playing, then going to the sound section of system preferences and then hitting the mute button for the speakers. this may or may not work, i don't know. it may be necessary to use external speakers for this.

although you said that your player is not mac compatable, you should be able to hook it up like an external drive and play it like that. you may need something like pod works, or some other downloadable widget. what kind of box is it?

Hmmm...this sounds familiar,I believe I had the same or similar problems onetime,I know I solved it but I'm not at my mac at present and can't quite remember the steps unless it's infront of me...I will check it out tonight and post later. I think I had some audio application that was not open but had mute ticked in it's preferences....or I needed to have that app open....hmmm...let me look in to it.

It's Audio Recorder.I think this was my problem. You have that installed?-Anyway,the 'monitor input' box should be ticked-(or not-whichever it isn't).
That's all I got.If you don't have Audio Recorder installed,it may be a similar problem with another app.If not....I have no idea.Sorry.Good look.

Yea! Finally got it to work. Thanks for all your help everyone unfortunately none of it worked but rep all round anyway. Under Utilities in Audio Midi Setup there's a 'thru' checkbox that needs to be ticked and hey presto. I'm reasonably new to macs so didn't know such a thing existed. Anyway happy days.:)
