There is a meeting tomorrow, wednesday november 3rd, above a hardware store opposite the palace on camden st. at 7:30 being held by Dublin Grassroots Network to discuss getting a social centre going.

So now it's time for all those post warzone "we should organise something like giro's in dublin ..." discussions to be put to the test, :) and for ppl to get involved from the start.

Actually, it was moved to someoes flat near by, and sorry for the short notice but I only found out on tuesday. Besides, this was only the first meeting and it'll be a long time before stuff starts coming together, though it is starting now and ppl should still get involved. There is another meeting next wednesday. I'll post up the minutes soon.

DGN Accommodation/social centre subgroup meeting 03/11/2004

8 present

1. We drew up a list of what we would like in an “ideal” social centre this
included: large area for meeting space/gig space, vegan café, storage space,
That we could repartition etc inside the space, kitchen area, potentially
available to other political and local community groups, library/infoshop,
reasonably close to city centre, space for making costumes, banners etc, focus
for activists but not just activists, space where you can feel comfortable. So
we aren’t looking for much!
2. Some info already available on rents etc from previous group – W to get
3. Getting more info from people who have tried similar before and, even,
succeeded
K to contact Louise Tierny (Outhouse), James Mc Barron (CAZ in Cork) and also to
check bookings in teachers club to see what sort of organisations are paying for
meeting rooms there right now.
E to contact Niall from Hope Collective Dublin.
CL to contact Laurance Cox re his efforts for a community space last year and to
ring Irish Housing Commission re legal aspects
M to contact Darren on Giros in Belfast
4. General appreciation that this will be a major long term effort with regular
meeting and that financing will be crucial. M + CB will start to look at
finance. We will probably need bank account, published accounts, very regular
donations. Generally felt we would set place up and then consult with other
groups who need meeting space etc – But this not fully decided on pending bigger
meetings
5. We need a schedule for ourselves also hoped that we could start organising
regular socials/cultural events in St. Nicholas Parish Hall, Francis Street.

The first of these is planned for Friday November 26th under the provisional
name Seomra Sugra (playroom) – W is booking room. Daren from Belfast will bring
down a video about social centres in Europe plus we will have DJs, live music
etc – We will also try to get some of the people mentioned above to do short
talks on their experience.

We will follow this with a large public meeting to start things off – probably
Wednesday 1st December in LASC

As people can see from the above we are at the very early stages in what will
probably be quite a long-term process and we need a lot of help.

Next meeting will be next Wednesday at 7pm – venue to be confirmed.

IF YOU WANT TO COME ALONG E Mail [email protected] and he will add you
to the mailing list

hows this for an idea if maybe in january we have a weekend of deadly gigs in dublin with all the bands forfitting payment and money will go to a little fund to help the idea of this communal space??

That's an idea but what about January gigs that are in the process of being booked?! Could be disastrous, and you don't want to fuck with GZ Dara, remember last time? This time we'll chop the whole thing off. !ninjaaaa

Don't want to be negative about this but just a reminder not to let the wrong people get their claws into this, "youth leaders", enthusiastic naive soicalist types etc. Yeah, makes me sound like a cunt, I don't give a fuck, you don't get too many tries at a place like this that would make Ireland worth living in.

that looks mad...

weird coincedence...we've (Basta! Youth Collective) actually just put in a proposal to the Presentation Brothers to see would they donate the Presentation Brothers House (which theyve moved out of and might be selling) to a trust that we'd run and turn the house into a sort of community centre with loads of the above and more... ill pm the proposal to ya shorty when i get a chance (its typed on a different computer). I'd love to see that video actually. Did you pass mine onto Cian?

I hope this all works out and gets the support needed.

I just started reading the 924 Gilman book, might be worth a look for people who plan on getting involved, some interesting ways of dealing with things are mentioned in it.

I think we are going to try and fit a short meeting about social centre before or after the discussion on wednesday at 7 in the Unawarehouse on Aboriginal Rights. Though the main social centre thing for now is Darren's screening on the 26th of November.
