Nina Nastasia:

Nina Nastasia returns with third album, Run To Ruin, which sees the folk noir singer songwriter resolutely turning her back on the commercialism and surface gratification of her Hollywood hometown by releasing a haunting collection of songs that is refreshingly otherworldly and time -laden. Recorded in April 2002, one week after Nina and her band played the All Tomorrow's Parties festival (curated by Shellac) at the windy ghost resort of Camber Sands, these new songs are delicate and intense. Neither sweet nor harsh, they draw on a rich heritage of ballads, waltzes and an American gothic groove that is all her own.
Her voice conveys an array of emotions as it wanders through a dense musical backdrop of cellos, violins and guitars like a curious child exploring a long deserted and overgrown house. A place not unlike Iain Burgess' legendary Black Box studio, the 300 year old farm house in Noyate La Gravoyere, France where Run To Ruin was recorded with Steve Albini, who has championed Nina's music since engineering her first record, Dogs, which was released in 2000 by the micro indie label Socialist.
While at the atmospheric Black Box studio, Nina Nastasia also recorded her first Peel session with her band, which includes such notable musicians as Jim White (the Dirty Three drummer) and Gerry Leonard (who is now the primary guitarist for David Bowie). John Peel (BBC's eminent DJ and rock scholar) has championed Nina's music since the release of 2002's The Blackened Air, which was sent to him by an enthusiastic Albini. Nina and her band record albums live, thus within a relatively short time frame, generally under a week. Run To Ruin is decidedly Nina Nastasia's darkest collection of songs to date.

Bob Log III:

WHO IS THE MYSTERIOUS HELMET-WEARING BLUESMAN BOB LOG?
A mysterious helmet-wearing bluesman who counts BRMC, The BellRays and the legendary Tom Waits among his friends and fans is causing palpitations in the music industry as many try to work out his true identity.
His name is Bob Log III and he is a one-man band, reputedly hailing from Tucson, Arizona. He performs dirty old-school blues with titles including 'Boob Scotch', 'Drunk Stripper' and 'Wag Your Tail Like A Dog In Back Of A Truck'. He also claims to have lost a hand when a child, only to have it replaced with a monkey paw - which encourages his style of guitar playing. His face is always obscured by a helmet with his visor pulled down.
Rumours have started to circulate that he is anyone from Tom Waits to one of the Strokes.
"He's Bob Log, an enigma." a spokesperson told NME. "He's not one of The Strokes. None of them have monkey paws."
"It's just the loudest, strangest stuff you've ever heard," said Waits. "You don't understand one word he's saying. I like people who glue macaroni on to a piece of cardboard and paint it gold. That's what I aspire to basically."
His new album 'Log Bomb' is released through Fat Possum on April 28. He will arrive in the UK in early May when interested parties can get a closer look and try to uncover exactly who he is.

The new Bob Log album LOG BOMB will be available on January 21st.
When we say that Bob Log III is "Big in Japan," we know that many of you think we are joking. Like, what are you going to do - go check it out? Well, it is true. It happened a couple of years ago, and the new album is being waited upon there as if it was a new one from Maraih Carey (she's big there too).

Tom Waits on Bob Log III:

In the April 24-May 1 issue of Time Out London, Tom Waits is asked who he is listening to right now. He says, "Well, I really like Wu Tang Clan, those guys kill me. And then there's this guy named Bob Log, you ever heard of him? He's this little kid -- nobody ever knows how old he is -- wears a motorcycle helmet and he has a microphone inside of it and he puts the glass over the front so you can't see his face, and plays slide guitar. It's just the loudest strangest stuff you've ever heard. You don't understand one word he's saying. I like people who glue macaroni on to a piece of cardboard and paint it gold. That's what I aspire to basically."

The Lonesome Organist:

Welcome to the wonderful world of Jeremy Jacobsen, aka the Lonesome Organist. Forms and Follies, the third album by the musical phenom the Lonesome Organist, was recorded at the Casa della Sheila and at the Cold House by Jeremy Jacobsen.
"The Cold House is a harsh mistress. It is an ice-encrusted cottage (that could be mistaken for a garage) where I recorded most of this record. My steel drum has lived here for a couple of years now in fear of the hammer and circular saw on the adjacent shelf."
The entire album was recorded on no more than 8 tracks - many with less, featuring Jeremy playing nearly everything and often simultaneously. For the first time the Lonesome Organist was not entirely alone, as bassist Nick Macri (Bobby Conn) joined on bass for the "Moon Fugue" and "Robot Fugue". Pre-recording the old fashioned way, Forms and Follies was scored and arranged on paper before entering the studio, with an emphasis on melody. The opening track "Cold House" picks up where Cavalcade left off, with The Lonesome Organist playing toy piano and Accordion. "Only if I get you" and "One of Me" are delicious Doo Wop numbers inspired by the early Sun Ra singles, and more obtusely the city of Milwaukee. Jacobsen sings all in these lamentations and love laced tales of trial and redemption:

"I'm in trouble again / My trouble has only started
100 days at sea / A million swarming bees
Only if I get you / Only if I get you"

"Walking to Bob's" was written while walking to, well… Bob's to pick up a notebook that he kindly rescued from the clutches of the neverbeseenagains. It is a lovely little modal cannon. "Who's to say your soul's not carbon" and "Multiplier" are classic rockers from the Lonesome Organist; that is, rock in the style of his debut release and live performances. These songs feature the Lonesome Organist playing drums, guitar, singing, and playing keys all at once. Core! What a feat! It was antics such as these that drew attentions of fans such as Tom Waits and David Bowie. Forms and Follies will be accompanied by a flip book, so the listener at home can wallow in the splendor. Jacobsen, an accomplished pianist and organist, is a jaw dropping mass of musical talent with an overactive imagination. A truly singular artist with a taste for the vaudevillian, The Lonesome Organist manages to reinvent himself with every release, expanding his musical forms far beyond the novelty of their delivery.

Neosupervital:

Neosupervital, part man, part drum-machine, part guitar synthesiser. His songs range from the uplifting and dreamy 'Rachel' to the almost doom-laden two-stepper 'Jazz Fascist', you can never really tell if he's trying to teach you a lesson or if he's simply content to have a laugh. A sight to behold and never begging the audience's attention, it seems like most of Dublin is eagerly awaiting his forthcoming second mini-LP entitled 'Focus' which is due out some time around June.

DAVID BOWIE on The Lonesome Organist:

"The Lonesome O playes (takes breath) drums, percussion, organ, harmonica, whistle, tap shoes, saxophone and voclas, among other things, ALL AT THE SAME TIME. I kind you not! Fabulous stuff with lovely line in titles. How about Balloon Race Phenomenon or Fly On My Plate? Try the album 'Cavalcade' on Thrill Jockey. Yes, it's the same label as MOM, but if this looks like an ad for T Jockey it's because they couldn't put out a bad record even if their ears were lopped off." David Bowie, MOJO, July 2002.

Thrill Jockey is home to artists such as Trans Am, Bobby Conn, Tortoise, Mouse On Mars, MOM, etc...
