Ended up owning a few of his albums back in the early nineties. Patchy to say the least. Dunno what I was thinking.

aye mans a legend. you want to check out Celluloid Records, one of my favourite labels of all time. Largely considered a post punk NYC label, but it's actually French, set up by Jean Karakos (when BYG disolved) with the help of Bill Laswell.
Savage bass player and top top producer.
Recently been listening to Deadline alot, a band he had with Manu Dibango

Far too much chaff surrounding this boy's wheat. Axiom Ambient, Table Beat Science etc is all bar background music. Not much of a bass player either (Massacre, Painkiller etc) but I like some of his remixing, eg In A Silent Way I think it was, I remembered quite liking and a lot of the New Africa Celluloid stuff was ace.

first Golden Palominos album is about the only record I really like him on. can't forgive him for the Fela Kuti debacle.

Fela Kuti debacle? What's that then?

Laswell produced 'Army arrangement', thought Fela's Sax and organ playing were too bad so he had his mates come in and overdub the parts. Was very nasty about F's playing - makes him a dick in my opinion. Shit album too. Fela's gumption more than makes up for his awful tone..

Okay I hate Laswell now too. What an asshole.
