Lunfardia, one of Ireland’s favourite purveyors of South American folk, launch their debut album ‘Picada Pa Cinco’ at the Dublin’s Sugar Club Wednesday 19th of March. The group will perform their vibrant blend of traditional and original music evoking the songs and sounds of Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, Uruguay, Bolivia and Peru.

This diverse and talented quintet is the most recent project from guitarist-singer Ariel Hernandez and accordionist Dermot Dunne who, as a duo, have achieved great acclaim over the past few years. Dunne and Hernandez began their creative collaboration back in 2004 and since then have toured extensively gaining many devoted fans around the country.
Lunfardia provides this duo an even richer instrumental palette with which to explore the traditional Latin- American repertoire as well as some of Ariel’s own compositions.

With the quintet a new scope and versatility is brought to their interpretation of this evocative music yielding greater opportunity to delve into material formerly unchartered as a duo. The result, evident in the quintet's debut recording, is a sound which ventures into new harmonic and rhythmic terrain whilst all the time displaying the dedication to authenticity long associated with Ariel and Dermot.

The two are joined by three musicians of equally excellent pedigree, each of whom brings their own distinct musical background to the table. Ioana Petcu-Colan, and Irish violinist of Romanian decent, is an established soloist and chamber musician who has gained much admiration for her work with Aurum Chamber Ensemble, Trio Avalon and the Irish Chamber Orchestra.

Irish bassist Malachy Robinson is also well known as for his work with the Irish Chamber Orchestra and contemporary music renegades Crash Ensemble. His professional experience covers a diverse spectrum of musical styles and genres within jazz, contemporary classical and early music which no doubt informs his authentic but playful rendering of these Latin-American dances and songs. Frank Vidal completes this accomplished line-up as he brings with him an traditional training in Peruvian percussion as well as many years of international touring and recording with his own band Onda Latina and as part of creative collaborations with renowned salsa singers Luisito Rosario, Antonio Cartagena and trombonist Jorge Ardiles Ruiz.

The quintet derives its name from Lunfardo, a language developed by the lower classes of Buenos Aires at the end of 19th century. A mixture of European, African and native Argentinean languages, it is bound inextricably with the music of the city and of the peoples that have congregated there. The word Lunfardia itself refers to the world that surrounds this unique colloquial tongue.

So take a trip to the heart of Buenos Aires with Lunfardia as they explore the Tangos, Milongas and Candombes, the rough-hewn Chacareras and Zambas from the Argentinean northwest, the cheerful Huayno from Bolivia, the strong percussive beats of Afro-Peruvian rhythms, the vertiginous Joropo Venezolano and the fast melodies of Choros from Brasil.
