King Khan & The Shrines
+ Jack of Heart

Whelan’s, Wed October 7th, Doors 8pm

Tickets €14 plus booking fee from www.tickets.ie, WAV, City Discs & Ticketmaster outlets nationwide

“The Dirtbombs on simultaneous James Brown and Sun Ra kicks, or Black Lips with less of the Vice-ready comedy and more underlying pathos.” - Pitchfork

“One of the most promising contemporary welders of genuine psych and soul.” – Austin Chronicle

King Khan & The Shrines have been spreading their love like peanut butter since 1999 and now their unique Sun Ra cum Stooges take on psychedelic big band soul is coming to Whelan’s.

The line-up includes 60 year-old Chicago-born, Ron Streeter (the live-percussionist of Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, and many other Soul-Legends), a horn section consisting of Simon Wojan (member of Kranky Records recording artists Cloudland Canyon), Ben Ra (Germany's John Coltrane), and famous French rockabilly saxophonist Big Fred Rollercoaster.
The story begins when the Montreal-born son of immigrants from India (and self-professed grandson of the opium-addicted "Johnny Thunders of the sitar") left home to play bass for the Spaceshits, a Cramps-linked garage-rock group fronted by Mark Sultan, aka future King Khan partner BBQ Show.

A few years later, while in Germany Khan formed "psychedelic soul big band" the Sensational Shrines. By 2004, King Khan and the Shrines had played shows across Europe, along the way releasing not just a handful of 7" and 10" records, but also two full-length albums: 2001's Three Hairs & You're Mine, which was produced by White Stripes engineer Liam Watson, and 2004's Mr. Supernatural.

In 2007 King Khan made the soundtrack and film score for Schwarze Schafe a major motion picture in Germany. They also released What Is?! which received critical acclaim and hit #33 on Pitchfork's Top Albums of 2007. 2008’s The Supreme Genius of King Khan and The Shrines (Vice) is a chronicle of how Khan became King.

King Khan & The Shrines have become an all-star international movement. The entire 11-person psychedelic-soul big band revue will be raving up the stage at Whelan’s, October 7th.

Jack of Heart
Departing completely from the static-soaked, overdriven throb prerogative of their previous bands, Jack of Heart is a new conglomeration of Piero Ilov from the Mighty Go-Go Players, Fatals and Demon's Claws, and Benji from the Creteens.

I'd feel pretty bad not to attend this. Haven't heard much but the few songs I have heard sound like they'd be pretty awesome live.

King Khan was only fab'lus, as were his Shrines.
His political geography is flawless.

Jack of Heart were rubbish.

Really great gig.

Amazing voice.

He looks like such a "square" in real life :). I was hoping would carry the persona off stage.

He would probably get murdered though.
