saw this guy support preston school of industry in america something like four years ago and thought he was awful, reminded me so much of the leagues of dublin singer-songwriter pap. thought it couldn't get much worse and then PSOI hit the stage. jaysus.

given that his first album is called mass suicide occult figurines, your friend is on the money. don't start there, though. better off with:

pixel revolt
cellar door
time travel is lonely
life & death of an american four-tracker
...then...
mass suicide

though there are some who say it's his best, i don't. his albums generally get better as they go along.

he was also in mk ultra ('member them?), whose last album - the dream is over - is great.

loads of downloads here http://johnvanderslice.com/html/mp3_index.html
including all of mass suicide, as well as the cellar door remix cd (mgm endings) and a handful from the other albums.

someone just released a cd called 5 years, compiling bits from all the albums.

aye, saw him in new york a few years ago and it was horrendous.
more so for the drummer, showiest fucker ever, he had a fan blowing on him, and would change out his cymbals for different songs

Cheers!
