“Their debut as a duo, Across the Black River, is a master class in eclectic musicianship, coloured by a restraint born of experience and a fluidity that surely owes much to their comfort in one another’s company.” – The Irish Times

“Across the Black River is of the top world music releases of the year from one of the greatest celtic fiddlers.” - The New York Times

Kevin Burke and his highly fluid and ornamented Sligo-style of fiddle is easily one of the most recognizable talents in Irish music today. From his early days with the ground-breaking and now legendary Bothy Band in the mid-70s to his tours with the Irish supergroup Patrick Street and the Celtic Fiddle Festival, Kevin Burke is widely respected as both an ensemble player and a dynamic solo performer.

Burke’s on-going interest in American music has led to recordings and collaborations with Arlo Guthrie, Tim O’Brien, The Dillards and his own acclaimed group, Open House. Burke was awarded an NEA National Heritage Fellowship in 2002 for his contributions to traditional music.

Portland, Oregon multi-instrumentalist Cal Scott has been playing a variety of music for years, everything from folk to jazz, on bass, brass and guitar. He has honed that musicianship into a career as a composer, arranger and producer. With extensive film and television scores to his credit as well as his own albums, Scott brings a seasoned and complementary aesthetic to his accompaniment with Burke. Scott frequently sings his own songs when performing shows with Burke.

“Cal’s execution of my ideas is stunning. You know how it is, when you talk about wine, you use all these vague terms, and most people don’t know what the hell you’re talking about. But Cal can actually do it. He knows what I’m getting at. He can bring those images to the fore right away,’ explains Burke.

The two first met while working on the documentary The Road to Bloody Sunday. Scott was commissioned to compose the score and he engaged Burke as a consultant on the project. They enjoyed working together so much that when it was completed they continued to spend time together, playing, recording and exchanging musical ideas. Across the Black River is their first album together.
