It seems Bertie's given some legal guarantee that Ireland will be ready and so the "Celtic" bid has become favorite because of our greater crowd capacities and good fan image.
Stumbling blocks for the bid are its isolation, it will only have been 8 years since they were held in England and Switzerland/Austrias political strength (Blatter).

i don't think ireland/sctotland are going to be succesful with their bid. The Scots are probably kicking themselves for having 'teamed-up' with ireland. The biggest stadium in the bristish isles and the bleeding GAA won't allow it to be used for a couple of games of soccer in 6 years time...thats just fucking childish.
considering that X (is it approx. 60 ? ) million of taxpayers money has gone into the stadium, it highlights the thankless and selfish attitudes of modern ireland where begrudgery is rampant and the GAA outdated...

go back to germany. british isles..... tsk.

i would like to apologise to the entire irish nation for my insensitive use of the term british isles to describe the 2 islands
lying of the western coast of mainland europe (not including iceland)

and slagging off GAA?!?

that's it, get your coat

By the way, the GAA are expected to let Croker be used in 2008, they were just pissed off that Bertie went ahead and said it out of the blue after saying a while back that it wasn't needed.

Ireland-Scotland bid to host Euro 2008 tournament fails
By Noel O'Reilly Last updated: 12-12-02, 13:33

Ireland and Scotland have failed in their bid to co-host the European football championship in 2008 with UEFA instead opting for bookies favourites Austria and Switzerland.

The decision of where to stage Europe's most prestigious tournament was announced after a drawn out selection process by UEFA president Lennart Johansson in Geneva this afternoon.

The combined Celtic bid is reported to have reached the final two from seven original candidates when voting took place among UEFA's 14-man executive committee in Nyon, but having gone head-to-head with Austria and Switzerland, was not considered strong enough to sway votes in their favour.

Speaking from Geneva, FAI President Milo Corcoran expressed his regret at the outcome.

"We're obviously extremely disappointed at not being successful. But there were a lot of good bids in their, we felt we gave it our best shot and there's not much more we can do.

"We've learned a lot from the exercise and have certainly enjoyed working with out colleagues from Scotland."

David Taylor, chief executive of the SFA, echoed Corcoran's sentiments and paid tribute to what he described as a top-rate campaign from the successful bid.

"We didn`t have the piper with us today," Taylor told reporters, "but if we did he would be playing a bit of a lament.

"We're clearly very disappointed with the outcome but we extend our congratulations to an excellent bid and an excellent campaign presented by Austria and Switzerland.

"Not we must concentrate on qualifying in due course and we will bring many, many thousands of Scottish and Irish fans to what I'm sure will be a memorable tournament."
