New Limerick alt club night Kennel District continues this week with the its first double-header to date, with the highly contrasting stylings of Endfindead and Síle ensuring that fans of folk and electronica can both be satisfied in the one night!
With the inventiveness of intelligent dance music (IDM) widely credited to Limerick-born Richard D. James, aka Aphex Twin, it has been surprising that not many electronic acts of note have emerged from the city. Then again, James wasn't even out of his cot by the time he had settled in Cornwall. However, one or two shining beacons have popped up in recent times, with Endfindead to the forefront.
Taking influence from Aphex, Arvo Part & Andy Irvine, Limerick's End/Fin/Dead is sometimes a solo effort (Don Simms) and sometimes a five man "live show". After a long hiatus, he/they began gigging last summer, spattering bemused audiences with dirty, unusual sounds ( including recordings of Commodore cassettes, his cat, charity shop tapes, records and toys, found objects and junk), and an increasingly odd live show. A self-released EP is planned for summer, as well as a full live band and collaborations. Check www.myspace.com/endfindead and see if you like it.

Síle is the music of Síle. We haven't asked her her surname yet. Making appearances at various shows over the past year, with the likes of Can Kickers and Mi & L'au, her wonderful lilting alt-folk has hushed audiences with ease and panache. Accompanied sometimes by piano, but more frequently by guitar, she has also made appearances with added strings to her live set-up. Adding to the mystery, rumours are abound that she was raised by leopards. Or maybe it was wolves. Either way, we like that story.
Check out Endfindead and Síle when they play Kennel District this Thursday night, February 8th. The night will also include the Kennel District Djs knocking out tunes of all varieties til the wee hours. Having a good time, all the time!
