Learning it at the minute actually - sumimasem! Rock hard it is, but i'll be travelling for about seven months before i get to japan, so i'm hoping to learn it off mp3s as i travel. And engerish teaching it is, just have to learn that proper like now too, otherwise you'll have a load of japanese lads going round going "yeah boy, sound out like".

I was throwing myself into the auld japanese myself recently enough; mostly out of sheer boredom. just the basics. very interesting though innit? it's insanely simple, yet also impossibly hard. if the whole kanji thing didn't exist it might almost be manageable. learning the hiragana and katakana writing systems is pretty straightforward. seems that to learn kanji would take serious long-term dedication though. what mp3s are you using btw? the pimsleur system? pimsleur is pretty good way to learn a language... man, I'd love to go to japan. doesn't look like that's gonna happen anytime soon though. or later, for that matter.

Yeah, i work with a couple of polish lads who're always trying to throw in colloquialisms to their speech with disastrous results. It's the inflections that catch them out i reckon, one of the lads used to try throw a quick "brotha" in the end of some sentences with a lilt on it like a Jamaican. Doooooooooooooooodge.

Japaneasy - i'm not going to bother with the kanji until i get there, just going through my pimsleur lessons for now. I have a rake of stuff downloaded, it's grand. Looks like i might be living with a friend of mine over there who's japanese, he's hoping to move to tokyo when i get there so i'll have to get good with the language, he's like oscar wilde with the written english, but his spoken english is like a less decipherable manuel from fawlty towers. If you do make it over to japan anyways, give me a bell, i'll be there about april until april or thereabouts. Oh and there's a thread on the boards.ie japanese board that has info for some game that's meant to be absolutely deadly for learning kanji.

Can you update the DVDs you still have available. It's a good collection (hope they're all leagal and shit). But you'll probs find a whole new format - say, movies implanted in your brain by chopstick - in Japan.

The dvds are all gone actually. It's a long story but basically i got screwed over by someone who i thought was helping me out. So they all gone. Sorry!!

Basically.... See, i was living in this gaff for a few months, got on very well with the dude who owned it, used to drink with him from time to time and all. I went to move into the then missus's gaff, which was a one bedroom but i had tonnes of stuff so worked out an agreement with the dude in the other gaff where he'd let me store my stuff in a corner of his garage for €60 a month. Paid for a few months, then met him out one night and was telling him i was off travelling and he said, about the garage rent, "sure don't worry, we'll work out something". So i stopped paying for about three months. Had been over picking up the DVDs and things and when they weren't selling so good, he offered to unload them for me. I said cool cos it was a pain in the arse to me. Went back saturday week and was unloading my stuff from his gaff (cunt didn't even help me) and he said "i'll give you e20 for that CD rack". I said "sure take the CD rack and we'll call it quits on the space rental". He says "you have to be joking, you owe me €180 on that". I just kinda looked at him and he said "tell you what, i'll take the dvds and we'll call it quits". So i grabbed the ones out of the box that were worth anything, reminded him of what he'd said, called him a cunt, and left. End of long boring story.
