The Darklight Film Festival celebrates independent, DIY and artist
films. This year's festival will take place in the Darklight
HQ, in The Factory, Grand Canal Dock 20 - 22 October.

This year s Darklight Festival will celebrate the spirit of
grassroots filmmaking; how friends and communities come together, and
against the crazy backdrop of global financial meltdown still manage
to make moving, hilarious, challenging and kick-ass films.

Spotlight on Docs

Darklight are excited and delighted to welcome Hussain Currimbhoy,
curator of the Sheffield Doc/Fest, as our special guest programmer
this year. Hussain has selected some feature documentaries for
screening that connect with the Darklight 2011 theme Strictly Roots;
Sound It Out, Blood In The Mobile, Resurrect Dead plus a special
screening and performance by the makers of We Are Poets.

ALT. DIST. DOC.

A Symposium on how documentaries have been leading the charge with
alternative and innovative distribution models. Guests include; Anna
Sissons from film distribution company DogWoof/Popupcinema,
documentary filmmaker and artist Jeanie Finlay, Hussain Currimbhoy
programmer Sheffield Doc/Fest, and Alan Maher Irish Film Board / Bord
Scannán na hÉireann.

Workshops topics include

Crowd-funding case studys with Fundit.ie

YouTube step by step of how to setup and get the most out, YouTube
partner channels.

Masterclass on D.I.Y. Alternative fundraising and distribution with
Sound it Out director Jeanie Finlay. (See

Show-&-Tell Screenings

New Indie Voices features a day-long Show-&-Tell style screening and
presentation, shining the Dark Light on filmmakers who collaborate at
a grassroots level from across the country. We will be screening work
by collectives of friends / colleagues / community groups / artists
/performers and / or random folk who ve met through the twists and
turns of life. Selected from an open call for entries these
screenings has been programmed by long time Darklight contributor
Michael Connerty and the Darklight team. Final programme TBA

Bellflower Film Screening & Workshop

Also part of New Indie Voices, we are thrilled to welcome SFX
magician and director of Bellflower, Evan Glodell. Made by Evan and a
group of friends from Ventura California, Bellflower was a big
inspiration for this years Darklight theme. As well as screening the
film, Evan will be doing a workshop on the amazing SFX and homemade
camera he and his friends created for this critically acclaimed and
brilliant film.

An agonizingly intense, almost unbearably beautiful first feature
from the writer-director Evan Glodell. (The New Yorker, Read more

Community Filmmaking Panel

Round table discussion on community filmmaking programmed by Eileen
Leahy (TCD) including Daniel Lucchesi, director of We Are Poets. A
panel consisting of community filmmakers, activists and artists, will
discuss the hows and whys of community film. Topics up for debate
include whether communities need to take control of how they are
represented and how they might do so through film. A panel consisting
of community filmmakers, activists and artists, discussing the hows
and whys of community film. A diverse panel includes: Katherine
Atkinson (Create), Paula Geraghty, (Trade Union TV), Dr. Àine
O Brien, (Centre for Transcultural Research and Media Practice,
Fomacs) Ruth McCarthy, (Pixelbrix & Outburst Queer Arts Festival) &
Joanie Whyte (Fatima Groups United)

D.I.Y

A symposium of workshops & discussions on the democratization of 3D
techniques programmed by Gavin Kelly and Caroline Campbell. Topics
including

Mocap Hack workshop hosted by Gavin Kelly (Piranha Bar)

Mocap Animate a look at low budget pipeline and techniques with
Giant Creative.

Stereoscopic pipeline camera to screen for the first Irish 3D
film with Sophie Merry and Sigmedia (TCD).


Artist in Focus: Jesse Jones

Now In its 5th year, the Artist In Focus strand of Darklight is where
we feature the work of exceptional Irish artists whose work
investigates the language of cinema. In previous years we have been
honoured to screen work by Vivienne Dick, Paddy Jolley, Willie
Doherty and Gerard Byrne. This year we are delighted to host a
retrospective and public interview with Dublin Visual Artist Jesse
Jones.
