The Taoiseach Brian Cowen has been included in a list of the top 10 leaders in the world.

In its report, Newsweek magazine said that, along with Finance Minister Brian Lenihan, Mr Cowen has pushed through austerity packages drastic enough to win the admiration of the international community.

But despite awarding him the title of 'Fiscal Taskmaster', the magazine said: "…The Irish aren't showing much gratitude - Cowen's ratings have plunged to a mere 18%, and his Fianna Fáil party can expect a drubbing in the 2012 national elections."

However, the magazine added that : "There's some hope that (Cowen's) government's unpopular measures will be rewarded in the long run."

They missed out the part that these guys let all this hit happen in the first place.

It's a fairly reliable rule that if the 'international community' admires your austerity measures then you're a very unpopular government with the citizenry. Newsweek doesn't know Brian Cowen and he's sound.

Cowen has been more or less saying for ages that how we are perceived is of utmost importance..worked out nicely for him irrespective of how hopeless and terrified we feel..like good, scared patients on a ward w the Matron from hell proudly showing her empty tray to the touring specialists..all meds administered as expected...the manner, the means, the bed-sores, the restraining harness burns all 'dealth with' under Matrons supervision and not worthy of the specialists attention

About to kick a sleeping dog here but we really should have voted no on lisbon 2 JUST to get FF OUT....with press like this and w the ultimately unconvincing opposition contenders and w ANY improvement in the nations vital signs FF still stand a chance of returning for another 5.

from JStress' first post here but beyond that its just a jolly good thrashing-type euphemism for a euphemism.
