Alliance Française de Cork presents
20th CORK FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL
1st - 7th March at Gate Cinema & Stack Theatre

Cork French Film Festival celebrates its landmark 20th anniversary with a wealth of cinematic gems. Curated by Paul Callanan, this week long celebration of cinema includes special preview features, animations, documentaries, cine-concerts, guest filmmakers and masterclasses.

Our full programme is now available online at www.corkfrenchfilmfestival.com

LIVE AUDIO VISUAL EVENTS - Specially commissioned for the 20th Cork French Film Festival.

CINE-CONCERT - live contemporary score to classic silent film.

L'Argent
France 1928 190min B&W
With live piano accompaniment by Ray Scannell
Friday 6th March 8pm Stack Theatre, Cork School of Music.

Business tycoons Saccard and Gunderman lock horns when the former attempts to raise capital for his faltering bank. Marcel L'Herbier's L'Argent is universally regarded as one of the true great masterpieces of the silent era of film. Thanks to its modern setting and simple story of greed and corruption, the film is just as relevant today as it was in the late 1920s

Perhaps better known as a playwright, Ray Scannell also composes music and sound design for theatre productions. His most recent play Mimic contained a significant score written for piano. The play received wide acclaim and Ray picked up the award for 'Best Male Performance' at this year's Dublin Fringe festival. Specially commissioned for the 20th Cork French Film Festival, this is Ray's first venture into scoring for film.

CLOSING PARTY

Somadrone & Eoghan Kidney present – SUBWAY

Sat 7th March 10pm Stack Theatre, Cork School of Music.

Neil O'Connor (Somadrone) and visual artist Eoghan Kidney deconstruct Luc Besson's 1985 movie Subway, reconstructing it live onstage. The film, an electrically charged excursion into 1980's punk surrealism, brought fame and international notoriety to Besson. Using analogue synths and live digital video performance technology, this screening will present a unique audio-visual retelling of this cult French film.

FILM-MAKERS IN CORK

Belle de Jour + Q&A
France/Italy 1967 101min 35mm
Screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière will be present for a Q&A after the screening.

A surreal tale of self-discovery and tragic passion, Luis Bunuel's Belle de Jour is one of the crowning achievements of the director's brilliant career. In one of her finest performances Catherine Deneuve affirms her status as one of world cinema's most electrifying actresses. Buñuel's close collaboration with screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière produced several film classics including The Discrete Charm of The Bourgeoisie and That Obscure Object of Desire, which brought them both Oscar nominations.

The Secret of Kells + Q&A
Ireland/France/Belgium 2009 75min 35mm
Director Tomm Moore & Co-Director Norah Twomey will be present for our special preview screening.
In this landmark anniversary year we are delighted to screen our first Franco-Irish film. Tomm Moore's debut feature The Secret of Kells attracted the attention of respected French producer, Didier Brunner, Oscar nominated for Belleville Rendezvous. The budget for this film was raised between Ireland, France and Belgium.

DOCUMENTARY RETROSPECTIVE Thurs 5th– Sat 7th (4pm daily)
Raymond Depardon: Profils Paysons

In 1999, Magnum photographer and filmmaker Raymond Depardon embarked on a ten-year film project to chronicle the changes in rural France. Depardon does not judge, he only observes in his expansive Profils paysans trilogy shot over 10 years. He captures vivid living portraits of people and a way of life that is largely in danger of disappearing. Raymond Depardon is also a dying breed, one of the last makers of documentaries to prefer 35mm film, his work has an unparalleled quality and dimension.

We present the entire trilogy over successive days culminating with the final episode,
La Vie Moderne, due for general release later this year.

MASTERCLASS - Thursday 5th March 4pm Stack Theatre, Cork School of Music.

Jean-Claude Carrière will present a Screenwriters Masterclass for Irish filmmakers.

Beginning his film career with director Tatti, Carrière went on to collaborate with the likes of Milos Forman, Jean-Luc Godard and Bertrand Tavernier. His scripts for Luis Buñuel produced six film classics, including Belle de Jour (1968) and That Obscure Object of Desire (1977), which earned him an Oscar. Another Oscar nomination came his way for his work on Philip Kaufman's The Unbearable Lightness of Being and he went on to write Cyrano de Bergerac, The Tin Drum and many other films, over 75 in all.
