Jonathan Franzen's "The Corrections"
Zadie Smith's "White Teeth"
Irvine Welsh's "Porno"

are three books getting plenty of shelf space in my local bookshop,

Any opinions?

Are any worth getting?

Have read all previous IW. But unfamiliar with other two authors. Although I believe "White Teeth" starts on Channel 4 tomorrow night.

Agatha Christie rocks.

The Corrections has been getting really good reviews every where, people the next great American novel. I got it for Christmas but haven't read it yet so I don't know for certain. Haven't heard anything about the other two but I really don't like Irvine Welsh. Get "The Life of Pi" by Yann Martel. Top class

Zadie Smith is a ride. I'd give her a slap of the fat lad. She has that whole brainy college student who, by night, is a demon dancer and a devil-in-bed.

Peter Carey is less attractive, but I really enjoyed "True History of the Kelly Gang". And the Bible.

White Teeth is a good ole read, and very funny in parts. It's sort of like a humourous take on what Hanif Kureshi was exploring with the Black Album - trying to retain (or loose) a cultural identity in modern day England. I'm looking forward to seeing how the series works out. C4 are also serialising Morvern Caller, Alan Warner's (first) book, which could be good too.

The Corrections is good in that disfunctional family way, funny, sad, interesting despite the fact that nothing really happens. Like Douglas Coupland for grown ups..

DC himself is excellent, particularly Girlfriend in a Coma and All Families are Psychotic

i liked the corrections a lot, more so as it went on. it's not the greatest american novel ever, or anything, but it's pretty good.

white teeth is fun, but, yeah, really loses momentum half way through. i'll be interested to see if the telly version neatens up some of the baggier plot ramifications.

I always thought Don DeLillo was a bit of a Douglas for the adults, specially stuff like White Noise. I am on a big historical trip at the moment, currently reading English Passengers which is a fairly hilarious and sad account of both a ridiculous idealistic voyage to and the settling of Tasmania in the 19th century.

booooks...

"I Know This Much Is True" by Wally Lamb.
Absolutely f*cking lethal. You will not be able to put it down.

Also:
"She's Come Undone" by Wally Lamb
"Tuesdays With Morrie" by Mitch Albom.
"Zen & The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance" by Robert M. Pirsig.

Haven't read "Porno" - someone got it for me fer me burthdee.

this is actually the best book i have ever read. really.

also anything by haruki murakami, they are all good.

'the farm of pain' by Wilson R. Trucef

'wilted stilts, wilted face' by Clyde Maxwell

and

'inherent cocktail glans' by Mark Lawton

are all cracking reads

but for some reason, only avaiable...in...eh.. some exclusive place, on parnell street.

cant remember the name of it.

oh yes. rules from a great height. one of those books i've been buying for loads of people as presents in an evangelical "you have to read this" stylee. "such a long journey" is really good as well, as is his latest one whose name i can't remember.

also agreed on the haruki murakami. "hard boiled wonderland and the end of the world" is one of the weirdest, most moving things i've ever read. have you read his nonfiction book about the sarin gas attack in tokyo? it's excellent.

oh...

and for sheer rock 'n' roll lunacy and over-indulgence, you HAVE to read "Dear Boy: The Life Of Keith Moon" by Tony Fletcher.

It's like 1000 urban myths and 10,000 rock 'n' roll stories rolled into one...er...big book.

sweet.

Of course the book you should all be reading is reviewed on page 26 of today's Irish Times "The Ticket" supplement....
