This is hanging in the window of Adams Gallery on Stephens Green...

Similar subjects have appeared in many works over the decades, but the painting that truly speaks of our age is an interior of Rick’s Cafe.

Wanting to make a comment on the modern-day urban environment, Roche chose his friend Beano Skint, the bass player with Dublin punk band Blood Or Whiskey. The presence of a Polish waitress, meanwhile, is another sign of the times.

About to tuck into a burger and chips, Skint is dressed in the fashion of his milieu - punk hair, studded leather jacket, skull rings and bracelets.

Punk musicians are seldom rendered in oils, and thus rarely feature on the cover of a fine art auction house catalogue.

Skint’s expression gives little away, but I’m reliably informed that he is delighted.
