Paper Cut Out
PAPER CUT OUT is a band residing in Newcastle Upon Tyne, U.K., formed about four years ago by Barry Wardle (Bass/Vocal), John Coburn (Drums) and Adam Gilhespy (Guitar/Vocal)
Their music is described as "tightly controlled chaos" and "near unintelligible yet strangely captivating". A compelling live band, their performances "disconcerting and confrontational". "Never mind stage presence, this band have venue presence".
Their recorded output consists of one, long sold out double A side 7"single ('Rats/Less A Roof, More A Ceiling, released on Jealous Records in 2003), and a handful of self released material.
What the press say:
"With the same urgency of early Fugazi or Nation Of Ulysses, the rhythmic thrust of Sweep The Leg Johnny and the tightly controlled chaos of a free jazz combo of their faces on something nasty, over the course of two short sharp electric shocks Newcastle's Paper Cut Out stake their claim as one of the most exciting new bands in the post hardcore/punk underworld." Ben Myers for Kerrang Magazine (five fuckin Ks too), review of 'rats!' single.
"First song is a short sharp burst of spazzy, jazzy, off-kilter post-punk - immediately afterwards the crowd turn and look at each other as if to say “whoa..what was that?!”.
It’s obviously something special. To say this band have stage presence would be doing them an injustice, these guys have venue presence. Constantly moving and intensely passionate. They’re rocking out and they’re loving it. So are we. Fast, tight, innovative. Astounding. If only it’d lasted longer. Clocking off after around 25 minutes, this is still one of the most enjoyable sets I’ve EVER seen." Michael Wilson for BBC Northern Ireland, review of live show.
"As disconcerting and confrontational as they appear, they chew and regurgitate dirty, fetid noise that’s near unintelligible but strangely captivating. Feverishly unwell and rabid, Paper Cut Out may be quite sick but their sound is far from ugly. In fact, a closer inspection reveals a whole set of discernable riffs steroid-boosted by even sicker dynamics and noise. Paper Cut Out are the undisputed kings of a twisted din that’d give The Jesus Lizard or even The Ex-Models a serious arm-wrestle." Manchester Music website, review of a live show.
"...a trio of little conventional jazz." Badly translated Spanish website.
"If Gang Of Four were a red dwarf (Paper Cut Out) would be their neutron star." Audience member in conversation after a performance in Dublin.
