black]A long time ago in a galaxy far far away…… well, not really it was actually a rough, tough London comprehensive school. The year was 1976 and an assorted rabble of teen tearaways was thrown together at said educational establishment and spontaneously evolved into the crazy pop group Bad Manners. It was a strange and unlikely formation because none of them could play an instrument but this minor detail was overcome and compensated for by bags of raw talent and unswerving determination A continual high level of performance over the last 30 years has rightly earned Bad Manners their reputation as a magnificent live act. The band had chart success with the 'Can Can,' 'Special Brew,' 'Lip up Fatty,' 'My Girl Lolly Pop,' 'Lorraine,' 'Walking in the Sunshine,' 'Just a Feelin,' all between 1979-1985. The story could end there and for some of the original line-up it did. There are many bands that’ve had chart success and then stop once the hits dry up and then go onto pastures new. Buster's passion for performing didn't allow him to do that and now after years of gigging the band have now achieved a cult status.

They have been fronted from day one by Buster Bloodvessel, a man of gargantuan proportions, one of the biggest voices in show business with the ebullient personality to match. The unparalleled longevity of their success, coupled with Buster’s ability to secure a place in the nations heart and collective consciousness are a testament to his enduring self-belief and the bands ‘consummate talent, unbounded energy and vigour. A Bad Manners show somehow encapsulates the spirit or essence of a good time, a party band without trying to be someone else, something else or without trying to move with the times because the band represents what humans have always done when the opportunity and conditions allow. Drink, dance and be merry. This makes the band original, authentic and timeless, cult; because it is what it is without having to change. To get cult status you don't dance to the latest tune you are the tune- Bad Manners don’t pay the piper , they break his whistle in half and stuff it up his kilt -

For those who have not experienced a Bad Manners show the question of what to expect might not have been answered. The question is not 100% answerable; I can only give the consistent qualities that exist in a Bad Manners show. Energy and passion with dance music performed by musicians not machines that creates a party atmosphere. The band plays the favourites, Buster does his stuff and people come back time and time again, it is an experience that has an appeal to an eclectic group, skins, punks, bikers, surfers, good timers, gig fanatics, Ska fans, nostalgic 40 somethings and students. The irony is that Bad Manners appeal achieves a multi-culturalism that a liberal government could never create and does this without trying.

Ska music originated in Jamaica and is a mixture of the blues and calypso with a strong rythmical off-beat. It was the forerunner to reggae. The UK Eighties Two-Tone Ska movement added some more ingredients to the pot. It took the energy and passion from punk, added more rhythm and replaced some of anger with irony.
In the UK Buster is readily recognised as the tongue wagging, pickled onion and pork pie scoffing, can can dancing, boot wearing, bald headed singer and TV star (‘TISWAS’ and 25 appearance on ‘Top of the Pops’), but throughout the world there are many countries that hold him in high renown and esteem and have adopted him as either a figure head of outrageous antics, a paragon of gastronomic consumption or a minor deity with healing powers-

In the USA he is referred to as ‘Lord of the Jellyfish’ or ‘King of the Beach’ in acknowledgement of his wave and crowd surfing prowess.
The Japanese revere him as ‘the singing Sumo’ or ‘Buddha in Doc Martens’ (touching his belly will bring fertility and happiness). In Spanish he is ‘el whappo’ (the beautiful one) curing sick babies and bottling local water in a late bid for beatification. The legends and folklore that surround Buster are the stuff of ripping yarns-eating a whole cow (Argentina), a whole crocodile (Australia), the biggest ever garlic sausage (13 feet) Germany. Buster has more capacity than most for larger than life exploits, including the upcoming 35 date UK Christmas tour in the UK ans Ireland which promises to be a marathon yuletide special of epic proportions.

The pleasure of a Bad Manners show is it is what it is without trying to be fancy. It's supposed to be hot, sweaty, gritty and rough and needs constant exposure to the nectar of public attention otherwise it will wither and die.
