An Taobh Tuathail Vol 1: le Cian Ó Cíobháin
Psychnonavigation Records, PSY 021

An Taobh Tuathail has been broadcasting the cream of underground music from around the globe on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta/ANOCHT FM since May 1999. West Kerry native Cian Ó Cíobháin, who has been presenting the show since its very first broadcast, selects the music Mondays to Fridays, 11pm-1am.

“Over the years, I’ve often been asked by listeners if I might compile CDs for them of some of the music featured on the show”, says Ó Cíobháin. “When I mentioned this in passing to Keith Downey, head of Psychonavigation Records, we set about releasing the inaugural An Taobh Tuathail compilation”.

“The show typically features many different sounds and genres. The shows coming up to the weekend concentrate on the latest underground electro & techno sounds, but for An Taobh Tuathail Vol 1, I decided to focus on the quieter stuff that I play earlier in the week” says Ó Cíobháin. “Basically, I picked tunes that I’ve loved over a period of time and that I feel have longevity”. These tunes include the spaced-out psychedelic pop of Ariel Pink, sumptuous electronica from Felix Laband, OST and Fug as well as demos from Galway-based artists Heftord & Beatpoet, that have not been available anywhere else to now.

An Taobh Tuathail Vol 1 is a continuation of Anocht FM’s commitment to showcasing new music from around the world”, says Seán Ó hEanaigh, head of programming at the station. “We are confident that this CD will satisfy the show’s current listeners and will also attract new ears to the programme”.

The CD will be launched with two shows in Galway and Dublin at the end of August, featuring the ilk of Cane 141 & Chequerboard, who are featured on the compilation. They will be performing live in the Róisín Dubh, Galway on Friday 24th August and in Dublin’s Sugar Club on Saturday 25th.

The CD can be ordered directly from http://www.psychonavigation.com/antaobhtuathail.html

An Taobh Tuathail ag craoladh scoth an cheoil ó thimpeall na cruinne ar RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta/ANOCHT FM ó 1999. Is é Cian Ó Cíobháin, ó Chiarraí Thair ó dhúchas, a láithríonn ATT gach oíche ó Luan go hAoine, 11pm-1am.

“Is minic d’éisteoirí fiafraí dom an mbeadh fonn orm cuid den gceol a chastar ar an gclár a bhailiú ar dhlúthdhiosa”, a deir Ó Cíobháin. “Nuair a luaigheas é seo aon lá le Keith Downey, ceannasaí lipéid Psychnoavigation Records, bhearthaíomarr ar chéad-dhiosca An Taobh Tuathail a eisiúnt.”

“Castar réimhse leathan ceoil ar an gclár. Cur i gcás, casaim ceol leictréonach os na clubanna ar an gclár ag fáisceadh leis an deireadh seachtaine. Ach do An Taobh Tuathail I, dhírios ar an gcineál ceoil machnamhach a chasaim ag tús na seachtaine” a deir an Cíobhánach. “Bheartaíos ar rianta a roghnú go bhfuil gean ar leith agam dóibh le fada, i bhfocail eile rianta a chreidim a sheasóidh lorg na h-aimsire.” Mar sin, tá pop-cheol sicídealach Ariel Pink le clos taobh le poirt áille leithidí Felix Laband, OST agus Fug ar an dlúthdhiosca, gan trácht ar dhá demo ó na léiritheoirí Heftord & Beatpoet atá bunaithe i gCathair na dTreabh agus ná raibh eisithe go dtí seo.“Tugann Anocht FM lántacaíocht do chraoladh an nua-cheoil ó thimpeall an domhain” a deir Seán Ó hEanaigh, Eagarthóir Stiúrtha Clár na seribhíse. “Creidimíd go mbeidh éisteoirí rialta an chláir fíor-shásta leis an dlúthdhiosca agus go meallfaidh sé eisteoirí nua chun an chláir”.

Beidh an CD á sheoladh ag deireadh mhí Lúnasa le dhá choirmceoil i nGaillimh agus i mBaile Átha Cliath leis na grúpaí Cane 141 & Chequerboard, atá le clos an an dlúthdhiosca. Beidh said ar an ardán sa Róisín Dubh Dé hAoine 24ú Lúnasa agus sa Sugar Club san ardchathair ar Satharn 25ú.

Right side of the road

Since it first went on air in May 1999, Raidió na Gaeltachta's An Taobh Tuathail has gathered many accolades and positive notices for the breadth and depth of the electronic, ambient and other sounds featured on the show.

The time seems right, then, for long-standing presenter Cian Ó Cíobháin to compile a 12-track compilation for the Psychonavigation label featuring such favoured Taobh Tuathail acts as Cane 141, United Bible Studies, Phelan Sheppard and Jimmy Behan.

The CD is released in August with launch shows at Galway's Róisín Dubh (August 24th) and Dublin's Sugar Club (August 25th).
