What Book Did You Read Last Night???

Finally reading Underworld by Don DeLillo Love it. He's some writer. “Sometimes I see something so moving I know I’m not supposed to linger. See it and leave. If you stay too long, you wear out the wordless shock. Love it and trust it and leave.”

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

That review by your man is a bit mean-spirited. Some books are not about the quality of the prose and shouldn't really be judged on that basis. Now, a badly written and boring book is another matter... That exchange you posted is actually quite amusing in its own way...

Bought this one yesterday and depending how I get on, I might pick up Night Film at some stage.

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

Michael Chabon: The Yiddish Policeman's Union. Just about 60 pages in, but pretty good so far. Thought the writing was a bit clunky at first, but that seems to be the style. Its quite film noir-ish and world weary, but quite amusing too. I think I remember @Bernie Lomax giving out about Chabon...

I recoil in horror first, and then cringe after seeing them. Honourable exception: Shawshank,

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

We used to have BBC 4 on a lot in our house when I was a kid for some reason. Used to love the Shipping forecast, with its west westerlies, nines, risings, fallings, slowlys etc, in that rich BBC 4 voice. Comforting.

Is he even an eloquent eejit? The book has been staring at me from the shelf since Christmas, but I just can't bring myself to read it. Wish it was shorter, less barbed and had recieved great reviews.

Any era! I totally see Azura Skye as Camilla alright. Cillian Murphy - maybe as Francis. Good call on Tom Wolfe too! Henry is a tough one

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

Yeah, I liked the first 3/4 best too. It really needed a good editing. Still lingering with me though and I finished it several weeks ago. I'm re-reading The Secret History at the moment. Even though I knew I'd loved it previously, I had forgotten most of the detail. Its great 2nd time round...

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

Calvino: If on a winter's night a traveller Just two or three chapters in. Not entirely sure if I getting to grips with the style. It's written in the 2nd person singular - something I'm usually not so keen on. But I'll give it the hop of the ball for now

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

Wow! I'm a slowish reader -took me about 3 weeks. But I only get about 30-40 mins reading in a day. I didn't consider it tough at all, just that it had a lot of detail, and it was written so well that I didn't skim like I might be inclined to do with other books. What would you consider a long...

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

I'm thinking about reading that, but after the length of The Goldfinch, I'm easing myself back into things with this...(as recommended by yourself) I've given up worrying about book covers with petals and butterflies..

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

Just finished it there myself. It was excellent, but God, it was long! The Theo/ Boris friendship was great alright, but I think I actually preferred the Theo/ Hobie one - there was something very calming about those sections. She's an incredible writer - the level of detail in there was...

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

Thats on my list. I love the Creation story. The book by David Cavanagh was great too. I used to love House of Love back in the days of their first two albums (1988 and 1990), both called House of love. They were indie darlings back then and featured a lot in NME and Melody Maker at the time...
