I have similar feelings about David Foster Wallace. Just can't bring myself to reading the humongous Infinite Jest, and have been looking for shorter recommendations. Might try that one. Lots of footnotes in the Nicholson Baker I'm reading now. Not sure what I really think of this particular...

Skippy Dies rocked! Really picked up after those first 50 pages..

Can't wait for this. Is it deliberately written as a comic novel, or is humour just a major part of it? I often find "comic" novels a bit forced. You know those blurbs - "uproariously funny" etc. Confederacy of Dunces had me tutting a lot for this reason.

I had the same experience with it a few weeks ago, and have also left it aside for the moment. I've read similar styles before and liked them well enough, and will probably re-visit at some stage.

Just finished that a week or so ago. Loved it. Beautiful writing, despite the profanities! Would've loved to have had a Latino guide for all the terms describing the various types of girls and lads. I kind of got them, but not totally. IT is deadly.

Shame about In the Heart of the Heart of the Country. Great title, lovely cover, and I had a very nice perception of it. Might give it a miss now. Highly regarded though, isn't it?

Loved Mina - it's been a long time since a book has had such a positive impact on me while reading it. Pity it (and hence the feeling) only lasted a couple of days! Will follow up with Skellig and the others straight away...
