Update on this. That was my old backpack, the new one (same brand) doesn’t have it. Clearly I haven’t cycled much since getting it!

If I’m only spinning down to the school or the Indian take away (which is mostly pedestrianised and separate cycle lanes) I don’t but otherwise I do. My backpack has a little elastic bobbin thing that holds the helmet on the outside of the bag.

There’s a part of the N4 where the bike/bus lane is fed onto the exit ramp and back onto the main road. There’s a set of lights at the top of the ramp and they will never change unless a car sits on the sensor box. Which means you have to take your life in your hands and break the red light if...

I’m not too worried. I had re-downloaded the app to check it in response to your question but I’m weaning myself off worrying about distances, speeds, etc. I check my walking distance once a week to make sure I’m catching up on a lazy work week at the weekend and that’s about it.

You have a fancier free account than mine.

It’s not available in the free version. I can see my “bronze” awards for the first three items on your list but need to pay to see the rest. I think they used to be all there though. In any case, all the values look to be wrong - my third longest ride is only 25km but given that I used to be...

Jesus, you’re only a feather. When I was at my leanest I was around 86-88 kg. I’m probably close to* 100 kg now. I also live in the Dublin hills so there’s no escaping the pain. *probably well over.

As my friend told me as I gasped up a hill: It never gets easier, you just get faster.

I’d still argue that you’re in a queue in that situation and the traffic behind just has to accept moving slower or waiting for the next turn of the lights. You’re not causing an obstruction, you are in a position to be seen and safe. As a cyclist, it’s what I’d do. As a driver, I’d prefer to...

I don’t really follow because when the light turns green, are you not going to move yourself? Or is it a filter light? Because if a car was stopped waiting for full green/correct arrow they would also be in the way?

You are traffic, you’re not causing an impediment by being at the front of the queue.

That makes me feel better about my one magazine indulgence (White Dwarf at 9.90 a pop).

The medical context doesn’t exclude the health benefits of cycling though. In fact, the general consensus would be that cycling is fucking great (a technical term). But in terms of landscapes, the reality is that cycling is largely done on roads shared with large, powerful machines which have a...

The “actually pedestrians should wear helmets based on the stats” argument is pretty ropey. Often it’s people reporting the numbers wrong - there are more head injuries in pedestrians than cyclists overall but only because there are more pedestrians. It starts swinging towards cyclists once you...

Yeah but it’s not a feeling like “vinyl has a warmth to the sound that’s not there on digital”. The bike fully becomes an extension of your body. The novelty of being the sandals guy at the triathlon is great and all but you’ll honestly enjoy the long cycles so much more if you switch over.

I’ve recently taken the clips off my bike because I’m just using it to go up and down to the supermarket or to the school, I don’t want to be walking on surfaces skidding about in the shoes. Otherwise, clips all the way - especially for that kind of distance. They never made me go fast but like...
