So what's all this about trouble at the Arctic Monkeys over the weekend?

Were you at my school? This exact thing happened there too. Plus you're the right age an' all. Maybe there was a spate of incidents in the mid-80s.

Cat Power plays Douglas Hyde Gallery

Can't believe that gig was as long ago as December '03. I found it really upsetting - as watching someone having a meltdown on stage would be. There were some horrible hecklers. It was totally out of order in this particular context. The Whelan's management should have taken her off much...

    It's the Sam Cooke thread!!

Well, I dunno about Mr Isaacs, but I think you should give ol' Susan a chance.

    It's the Sam Cooke thread!!

"Born Alison Anne Cadogan on November 2, 1951, in Kingston, Jamaica, she came from a musical family, and her mother had in fact released a number of gospel records during her childhood." She has an album called "Soulful Reggae", so maybe we're both right? Allmusic.com categorises her as...

    It's the Sam Cooke thread!!

I'll let you know when I listen to the rest of the album, yeah, now that I think about it, the Bridges one is quite reggae-ish, but I think she's from a soul background. No doubt someone on here will know more...

    It's the Sam Cooke thread!!

Cool, thanks for the recommendations. Just in case I wasn't clear, Susan Cadogan is straight soul, not gospel soul (although I'm sure there are a few in her back catalogue, as it's how most of them start off).

    It's the Sam Cooke thread!!

Sam Cooke (and the Soul Stirrers)'s Jesus Give Me Water is inspirational. That and Touch The Hem of His Garment nearly turned this atheist to religion. (I decided to just become devoted to gospel music instead.) If we're on the soul train, Susan Cadogan rocks. Fell in love with Don't Burn...

    GLASGEE

I'm (hopefully) heading to Glasgow for the weekend in August. Aside from Optimo (for which I've had to get more expensive flights because it's on a bloody Sunday), I've not a clue where to go, what to do. Any suggestions? I found a post from 2 years ago, but I'm assuming people have been there...

    The Blue Nile

I'm a 'yay' for this too. My mate recently put 'Tinseltown...' on a compliation and I've fallen in love with it. Think she has both albums if you're interested in a bit o' burning.

    Cork's Czech Your Headfest-8th April,Cruascín Lán+much more:

Ah, that's all right, we'll pay at the door so, just figured if I could sort it out before I travelled down there, I would.

    Cork's Czech Your Headfest-8th April,Cruascín Lán+much more:

Wow. I'm in Cork that weekend to cover the City of Culture yokemebob and I'd much rather go to this than some Beckett reading (he has in moments an' all, but not on a Friday night). Do you know where I could send my ticket buyers/organisers to get tix for this?

    new slint songs?

Ferget it, kid, I'm going to have three burly(ish) men helping me in my mission to be in the front row. They just don't know it yet. Sounds to me like they've put a LOT of thought into the organisation, but yeah, I'd be a bit worried about everyone crowding in to one room at the same time...

Things I miss about the 1890s

Red postboxes are just more beautiful than green. Fact. I miss: Lounging on the chaise longue eating violet creams and reading Marx while the peasants did all the work. (Although don't think the violet creams had been invented yet.) And consumption. What a great way to go!

    kEVIN mEYERS. Twat extrodinaire.

This is exactly why Kevin Myers exists. And he is handsomely rewarded for it as well. Someone mentioned earlier in the thread that he should be forced to be a 'proper' reporter. He actually started his career reporting on the Troubles in the North. The ultimate fault (if you see it as...

    new york

I'm trying very hard not to be jealous. There's a good thread around here somewhere about New York (from August last year I think) that I found really useful when I went in January. Try and get to some gigs while you're there - I went to the Knitting Factory (Leonard Street in SoHo) and...
