Thought this might be of interest to some people here. It's a link to a documentary, made by myself, about the UCC Gamelan Orchestra, which was broadcast on Cork Campus Radio recently.

It's called "A Portrait of the UCC Gamelan Orchestra". For those not in the
know,
a gamelan is an ensemble of traditional Indonesian (in this case Javanese) instruments. One of these
resides in the
UCC Music Dept., since being originally commissioned in 1995. It's been an
integral part of the music curriculum at UCC ever since. This is the only full gamelan ensemble on the island of Ireland. The players in the
orchestra are the staff and students of the School of Music at UCC, and they
generally perform once a year (this concert is usually sold out - they did play in Trinity and UL once some years back I believe). As a
result, the
Gamelan Orchestra at UCC is something of a hidden treasure.
The type of music involved is hard to describe if you've never heard it, but
you'll get an idea of gamelan music in general from this video clip:
The radio documentary features interviews with Mel Mercier, the Head
of the School of Music at UCC and Director of
the orchestra, as well as other staff and students of the gamelan, and
also includes recordings of rehearsal and concert footage from the last performance at the
Aula Maxima in UCC in March of this year.
