Hi
I was wanting to enrol onto a basic home study course in music studies with one of these online distance learning course providers.

Just asking if anyone here has done a theory based course in Music studies or do you suggest I enrol onto a hands on practical course at my local College.
They have a Music course.

Thanks

Do it yourself, save the cash you would have spent on the course and put it towards an instrument.

There's plenty of theory tutorials out there for free, visit your local library and check out some books on theory, check out the course topics for college music courses and tailor your own course to your needs.
Figure out what you want to gain from it before you do it,play with others, start a band, buy me a pint

It really depends on what you are good at I think. If you feel good enough on your instrument that doing a practical course could get you somewhere, then go for it.
Personally, I am much better at the theory side of music, but the reality is that theory only goes so far - modern composition, in any genre, usually picks influences and techniques from whatever the composer feels like, and so classical music theory is hardly essential.
Still, it's useful to have an understanding of harmony and counterpoint, it will improve songwriting in certain ways. Myself, I think that a good instrumentation course or module is an amazing to get, and can really open up a whole new area of inspiration that would only have been dabbled in before.

As far as doing a music theory course online goes, sure go for it, I don't see any particular disadvantage, except that certain 'physical' courses might have particular teachers for modules that might be good. For instance, I had Donnacha Dennehy for instrumentation in Trinity, and the guy is a legend, absolutely brilliant teacher to have for that subject.

From my experience you are better attending the collage. You will be losing out on the contacts you make inside the industry that the course will supply.

If you think this is career move for you go to collage. It's a long struggle for anyone, why make it harder for yourself?
