Masters of Groove are the ultimate all-star group of jazz/soul/funk/groove veterans coming together to make some waves. Led by legendary Hammond B-3 organist Reuben Wilson, with jazz guitar legacy Grant Green Jr. and the world’s most recorded drummer Bernard ‘Pretty’ Purdie, Masters Of Groove are perhaps the most exciting band in contemporary jazz. The ensemble harkens back to the Soul Jazz of the 1960’s while progressing forward into the jazz/groove/jam band awakening.

Blue Note recording artist Reuben Wilson is one of the most influential jazz-fusion artists of all time. His 1974 classic Got To Get Your Own became a massive floor-filler in the 80’s and his cuts have been sampled by A Tribe Called Quest and Nas amongst many more.

Son of legendary jazz guitarist Grant Green, Grant Green Jr. grew up in Detroit in the heyday of Motown and inherited his musical legacy from his father’s friends, Miles Davis, Glady’s Knight and Marvin Gaye, amongst others.

Bernard Purdie is renowned as the funkiest soul drummer in the business and is the most recorded drummer in musical history. His work can be heard on recordings by James Brown, The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Miles Davis, BB King and Cat Stevens to name but a few.

Catch Masters Of Groove live at Dublin’s CrawDaddy on Monday August 2nd. Doors 8.00pm. Tickets available through Ticketmaster and usual outlets.

BIOGRAPHYS

REUBEN WILSON
In the late 1960s, Hammond B-3 organist REUBEN WILSON began ascending to his current status as a "godfather" of acid-jazz by demonstrating a command of funk that helped redefine the soul jazz movement created by the likes of Jimmy Smith and Jimmy McGriff. Impressed by these great players, Wilson began to infuse the music with a pop sensibility not previously pursued in jazz circles. Around this time, he met drummer Bernard Purdie, another player with modern sensibilities who joins Wilson in the current Masters of Groove line-up. While some believe his best work is represented on his five Blue Note releases, Wilson also laid down some trailblazing sides for the Groove Merchant and Chess/Cadet labels. During the 1980s, "Got to Get Your Own," the title track to his 1974 Cadet album, caught on in dance clubs in England. The song, now an acid-jazz classic, was reworked by Wilson for Organ Donor, his 1998 release. Wilson's influence was still evident in the '90s thanks to such groups as Tribe Called Quest, Nas and US3 sampling his compositions and Wilson was honored with his first gold disc in 1997 for his compositions on the US3 recording, Hand On The Torch. In 1995, Wilson toured Europe, Japan and North America as part of rapper Guru's “Jazzmatazz II,” a crowd-pleasing all-star aggregation also featuring Kenny Garrett and Donald Byrd. Wilson continues to have a profound influence on the modern music scene, now playing to the children of his original audience. Currently working with Masters of Groove, Wilson sounds better than ever.

GRANT GREEN JR.
As son of the legendary jazz guitarist Grant Green, young GRANT GREEN JR. was exposed to exceptional musicianship and superb guitar playing right out of the womb. At the tender age of 5, with hands barely big enough to grasp the instrument, Grant Jr. played his first chords. He grew up in the Palmer Woods section of Detroit during the heyday of Motown and the Detroit Jazz scene. His neighbors included Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Gladys Knight, along with members of both the Four Tops and the Temptations. Practicing along side neighborhood pal Earl Klugh at his home, Grant Jr. enjoyed a constant parade of jazz greats streaming through his living room. As his father and family friends like the great Miles Davis jammed around him, the young Mr. Green listened and learned. The Conservatory that Grant Jr. later attended was simply the environment in which he lived; music surrounded him like the air he breathed. Today, you can hear all of these influences in Grant's style blends his technical mastery with heartfelt soul - it is this combination that sets him apart from the pack.

BERNARD PURDIE
BERNARD 'PRETTY' PURDIE is the world's most recorded drummer, appearing on over 3,000 albums. His unparalleled career has seen him perform and record with an amazing list of jazz, soul, funk, blues and rock stars since he moved to New York in 1960. He's anchored sessions for The Rolling Stones, James Brown, Isaac Hayes and Tom Jones. He's worked for years with Aretha Franklin and recorded with Miles Davis, Larry Coryell, Herbie Mann,
B.B.King, Lou Donaldson and Hank Crawford. Others to benefit from his amazing backbeat were Steely Dan, Joe Cocker, Cat Stevens and Hall and Oates. He's renowned as the funkiest soul drummer in the business - if it wasn't for him, rappers wouldn't have a groove.
