It's actually "gmail", google's email thing. It's got an elitist signing up process, in that you cannot just register on gmail.com, you have to be invited by an existing gmail members. This way gmail seems cool and trendy, and everybody clamours for invites and talks about it all the time and fills up messaging boards and mailing lists talking about the damn thing.

nah its just cause its being beta tested.

I'd imagine another reason for the invitation procedure is that they can keep track of communities like this. They can mine data using the info they have about you and your peer group instead of the info they have about you on your own. I suppose they might be able to use it to predict trends etc ...or possibly more sinister stuff depending on how paranoid you are.

Personally, I reckon anything on the web that says 'click here to send it to a friend' is best avoided.

Trying to get something to take off in the way they're doing isn't going to work unless the thing is, as it happily is, the proverbial dog's. Lots of storage, grouping of conversations, God knows what else....marvellous.

Interesting. That never dawned on me. I guess also it must be an interesting study to see how information spreads out from a source.

I think also they didn't want their servers being overloaded on day one with requests. Having gradual increases in the load, they can more easily predict what hardware they need to support this.

id say theyll just get everyone using it with the large storage space then 18 months down the road say
"pay us $20 a year for the space or we'll only give you 2mbs free"!bog

other .coms have done it on a smaller scale and when it happens, watch the share price rise
