The Estranged - Subliminal Man LP

Past and present members of Portland, OR hardcore mainstays such as Remains Of The Day, Hellshock, Warcry, Lebenden Toten, etc. pull a 180 and dish out 10 tracks of icy, ominous post-punk. Since their last release, The Estranged have dialed back the explicit aggression of their early singles a bit, and dialed up the textured, atmospheric, layered sounds of prime '80s deathrock/post-punk. 'The Subliminal Man' was painstakingly, impeccably recorded at Type Foundry Studios in Portland and features eight new ones, a re-recording of 'Statue In A Room' (originally released as a split 7' with Autistic Youth) and a rather stunning cover of The Flys' 1978 classic 'Love And A Molotov Cocktail.

CROW / SEE YOU IN HELL split EP

Japanese Crow has been going for some time now and I know I'm not the only one to think so when I claim that their later releases, from the "Bloody Tear" LP and forward has held their very best material. Other than the characteristic vocals of Crow that's an instantly giveaway, the band has become synonymous with sharp metallic riffs, a thundering bass, and rumbling drums - making for a raw and brutal delivery that brings both the noise and the crust bands of Japan to mind as Crow are incorporating both styles in their sound. There aren't too many bands that manage to make primal brutality sound as damn catchy as this lot does. Really powerful, a flawless execution, and truly excellent if you ask me.
Even though it was a good record no doubt, I wasn't equally impressed with the last LP "Utok!" from See You In Hell as I was with the "Umet se Prodat" LP. I think mainly the sound had something to do with this, as there weren't anything wrong with the song writing. As I listen to the two offerings on this split I can establish two things - the sound is great, and the songs are great! Raging and, somewhat Nippon-influenced, hard as hell Czech hardcore - again placing See You In Hell high up on the list over the best European bands at the moment, right where they've previously proven that they belong. A furious tempo, a crushing rhythm section, speedy riffs and rampant leads that pierce through the raw and compact sound - topped off with intense vocal efforts. On a See You In Hell record you can always expect a high level of intensity, but also always great memorable and varied song writing throughout - this is no exception.

ALPINIST is a dark hardcore four-piece from Münster, Germany. "lichtlaerm/minus.mensch" is crushing yet beautiful - heavy and atmospheric crust- and post-hardcore, bringing to mind the likes of FROM ASHES RISE, FALL OF EFRAFA, early ENFY etc.. They’re definitely an apocalyptic journey of sound. MASAKARI got finally a new record! Close your eyes and imagine that His Hero is Gone and Amebix got together and had a child… got it? Ok, now imagine that that child grows up in a dank room full of teenage angst, listening to nothing but Death Side and Disfear records until he is 21 years-old. Now open your eyes and what you have is Masakari, a crust punk band from Cleveland, Ohio. The LP comes as a 180 gram pressing a awesome heavey cover and a poster!!!

Monachus - Out Of The Blue LP

Due to artistic differences and a potential lawsuit over their chosen name, 2009 saw the death of swedens ICOS, a band known for its crushing impassioned resonance. In the years that followed, brothers Erik and Oskar Karlsson and Martin Bengtsson took the spirit of their former band and worked at creating a larger, more ominous and ultimately more considered sound, with their new drummer David Flood. This band would become MONACHUS. capturing an organic timbre that invokes images of these swedes toiling over beloved instruments, their debut album OUT OF THE BLUE draws influence from brooding sludge metal, yet invokes a sense of timeless peace, surging waves of sung and groaled voices, raucous walls of guitars and emotive poise.

The Assassinators - Sigt Efter Hjertet LP

First they released a demo, then came their first 7", and after that came their demo as a 7" - all of them very well received by me and I dare to say a large number of punks worldwide. In late 2007 they visited the studio again and returned with the twelve tracks that became this LP. Charged with emotional melodies and punk attitude they've once again created songs that are impossible to listen to without getting completely sucked in to. I've in earlier reviews said that their lyrics are poetic, but that is also true about their music and the structures of their songs. It's very poppy at times and all this rambling about emotions and poetry might scare away some real hardcore d-beaters, but to avoid any misunderstanding I want to make it perfectly clear that this is without a doubt punk. Punk in a pure and danceable form. Punk to which you can shake your ass while clenching your fist - not in anger but with dedication. The Assassinators makes me believe we can actually change the world to the better, even though they do address some dark topics in their lyrics as well. Still, this band gets me motivated to do what I think is best for myself and others and are doing so while providing one hell of a soundtrack. But The Assassinators didn't just spend time writing music, this LP also comes with a thick booklet full of artwork and all their lyrics in Danish and English, along with in depth commentaries. This band has definitely not forgotten that it's very possible to combine punk, fun, and politics and get a very successful result. "Let this be a declaration of love or a kick in the ass" - LP comes with an 32 page LP-size-booklet and a huge poster!!! If you haven't got then get it!!!

Rampaging hardcore noize from these Australian fanatics. This band takes the Disorder/Confuse style of hardcore and cranks up the distortion in the style made famous by bands like Gloom and Disclose. Has the same hard charging power and wall of raw noise of bands like D Clone, Perdition and Nerveskade but with a solid and powerful hardcore punk backbone that recalls the masters of Scandinavian hardcore from years past. Some bands attempting this style start to fall apart and just sound like a barrage of senseless noise. Kromosom holds it down with solid and punishing songs directing, yes, channeling the energy of the noise and distortion in crushing riffs instead of pure white noise.

REPRESSED on 180 gram Vinyl and with a blue cover!!!! After their Demo and their Split LP with Finisterre, this is the third release by this outstanding band from Münster / Germany. These four young people have played countless shows in europe the last two years and should be well known for all those into contemporary melodic HC/Crust. Definetly one of the best bands in this genre coming from germany at the moment. I expeceted a lot from their new recordings, but what they deliver here exceeded all expectations. An almost fourty minutes thunderstorm in 11 acts, paired with a voice of dispair and accompanied by blistering melodies.

The band that stands before you known as Morne started with many trials and tribulations. It began back in 2005, and even though there were many interested individuals, only one lineup had the dedication and perseverance to make the band a reality. The band features Milosz (ex-FILTH OF MANKIND) on guitar, Jeff (ex-DISRUPT, GRIEF) also on guitar, Max on bass and Kevin on drums (both from various Boston bands). Morne draws it's influence from powerful, intense bands such as AMEBIX, NEUROSIS and SACRILEGE. The undertones of these bands can certainly be heard in Morne's sound, but they create an atmosphere all their own. WARPRAYER features members of ripcord, dumstuck, gurkha... and its crust as fuck..

Finally a new record from this awesome band from Cleveland! Close your eyes and imagine that His Hero is Gone and Amebix got together and had a child… got it? Ok, now imagine that that child grows up in a dank room full of teenage angst, listening to nothing but Death Side and Disfear records until he is 21 years-old. Now open your eyes and what you have is Masakari, a crust punk band from Cleveland, Ohio.

Aus Rotten was one of the best punk bands or the 90's for two reasons. 1. They play excellent hardcore punk in the tradition of Discharge, the Varukers and Chaos UK 2. They make the connection between punk and radical politics in a clear and understandable way.

New split 7" between Filthpact crusty grinding from Scotland. who reformed in 2010 after breaking up back in 2007 now they are back to continue where they left off playing thier Total Crust Violence and coinciding this split with Kansalaistottelemattomuus to match their tour of Finland together, Kansalaistottelemattomuus come from Finland bring a Scadinavaian hardcore sound mixed with anarcho spirit of a familiar sound of Oi Polloi which may come as no surprise with Deek from Oi Polloi on vocals.
