SYMPOSIA AND WORKSHOPS AT DARKLIGHT 2008

This year's Darklight presents the usual (well, unusual usual) eclectic mix of cutting edge symposia and workshops, getting up close and personal with the worlds of film, animation, new media, digital technology and much, much MUCH more.

Entrance to the entire symposium/workshop programme costs a rather reasonable €50. Student/unwaged tickets can be purchased for €20.

FRIDAY EVENTS

DIGITAL WATCH:

Darklight and Digital Media Forum present a pair of cutting-edge symposiums exploring the digital mediaverse.

SYMPOSIUM: LETTING IT ALL HANG OUT: PRIVACY VS. PUBLICITY IN THE
VIRTUAL WORLD

Film Base, Friday 27th June, 10 - 11.30 am

For a new generation of 'digital natives' privacy is no longer a requirement. Web 2.0 has brought with it a transformation in how we view the need for privacy and engage with the public realm - but at what cost? The discussion will be prefaced by a keynote address from Daniel J. Solove, Associate Professor of law at the George Washington University Law School, and the author of The Digital Person: Technology and Privacy In The Information Age. Chaired by solicitor and digital rights expert Caroline Campbell, the panel will also feature Irish blogging guru Damien Mulley.

SYMPOSIUM: WEB 3.0: WHERE NEXT FOR THE INTERNET?
Film Base, Friday 27th June, 12 - 1.30 pm

This panel discussion will look at what is the next stage of development for the World Wide Web - and it's parent, the internet. Cloud Computing, Rich Media applications, Mobile internet, 3D internet, Semantic web, The Grid, wirelessly-enabled appliances and sensors... All these concepts will be analysed, discussed and explained and given context for the creative community and general public alike. Chaired by Anton Mannering (Digital Media Forum), participants will include Bill McDaniel (DERI, Galway) Chris Howard (Head of 3D Internet, IBM) and Joe Dromgoole (Put Place).

INTRODUCING... VIRTUAL CINEMA

Symposia and screenings to celebrate the launch of the Irish Film Board/Wildlight Virtual Cinema initiative, a new scheme focused upon the production of high-quality Irish short films that are suited to the new forms of digital video consumption.

SYMPOSIUM: THIS IS THE HOUR: NOT JUST ANOTHER LOW-BUDGET FILMMAKING
SEMINAR

The Light House, Friday 27th June, 2 pm

Darklight are delighted to welcome Warp X head honcho Barry Ryan to the festival as part of our Warp strand; Warp X posits a new model for the British Film Industry, a sustainable digital studio driven by creative talent and a dynamic business model that rewards everyone involved in the films. With budgets available for independent film steadily decreasing, what better time to get together and talk about the agonies and ecstasies of low budget? Participants will include Darklight Director Nicky Gogan (Still Films), Documentary Doctor Fernanda Rossi and Barry Ryan (Head Of Production, Warp X).

SYMPOSIUM: DECODING VIRAL MARKETING
The Light House, Friday 27th June, 4 pm

Wikipedia puts it thusly: 'Viral marketing is a marketing phenomenon that facilitates and encourages people to pass along a marketing message voluntarily. The basic form of viral marketing is not infinitely sustainable.' The successful viral marketing campaign is the Holy Grail of twenty-first century media... How to capture lightning in the virtual jar? Chaired by Steve McCormack (Wildwave), the panel will include Fionn Kidney (Strategem) and Irish internet phenomenon Sophie Merry (Bandy Toaster).

WORKSHOP: INTRODUCING... MICROSOFT SILVERLIGHT
Film Base, Friday 27th June, 2 pm

Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform and cross-device plug-in for delivering the next generation of media experiences and rich interactive applications for the web. We give you the skinny.
Presented in association with Microsoft.

WORKSHOP: INTRODUCING... THE RED CAMERA
Film Base, Friday 27th June, 4 pm

It's the digital video camera the entire industry is talking about and it's going to change filmmaking forever. Darklight presents the ultimate bluffers guide to Your New Best Friend.
Presented in association with the Irish Film and Television Network.

SATURDAY EVENTS

FAMILY WORKSHOP: MORPHATHON
Hosted by Michael Connolly
Meeting Room, Irish Film Institute, Saturday 28th June, 11 am

Fun for all the family! Bring life to an inert blob of clay! Darklight's popular animation workshop for kids returns and this time Mammys and Daddys are allowed to join in! Everyone attending will get an opportunity to be an animator, cameraman and video editor, creating their own personal clips. All are welcome!

Advance booking is required for this event. Contact Darklight at 016709017 or email: contact@darklight dot ie

TALK: DAVID O'REILLY GETS ANIMATED
Film Base, Saturday 28th June, 5 pm

David O'Reilly talks about ideas relating to modern animation filmmaking, with a particular focus on 3D aesthetics, appreciation of movement and (in his words) a whole load of other things. He will illustrate using choice examples of his own work.

SUNDAY EVENTS

TALK: KEN PERLIN: TRON AND BEYOND
IFI Meeting Room 3 pm

We are delighted to be joined by effects wizard and Oscar winner Ken Perlin, Professor Of Computer Science at New York University; Ken worked on Tron, and since then has been developing new computer
graphics techniques widely used in the motion picture special effects industry. Don't miss the opportunity to enjoy a rare audience with a true FX pioneer.

That's enough for now. The Bottom Line: We recommend you buy a pass. Immediately.
