I need to advise my mother on getting the cheapest computer possible.

All she uses it for is a bit of word processing.

those dell machines are pretty ok pricewise. you can obviously get better deals, but the big advantage will be dell customer support if it goes pear shaped, unless you're able to fix basic pc problems yourself.

Does it have to be new? You could try Freecycle. Old PCs pop up there every so often, and most should be capable of word processing.

Jaguarcompsys.ie are great. take this for example. 249 ex VAT. Grab one of the millions of CRT's being thrown out at the mo if it's just for word processing and not surfin' stick on XP. you can get an activation code somewhere, if you can get a copy of XP corp you dont even need to activate it. and for €301 including vat you have yerself one cheap-ass but perfectly good word processor.
