LA’s art-pop supremo Ariel Pink is set to bring his Haunted Graffiti project to the UK and Europe this summer. Hailing from the same Paw Tracks stable as Animal Collective, Pink signed to the label when Animal Collective discovered him on a 2003 West Coast tour, ending years of relative seclusion spent recording in the LA hills. One for fans of Animal Collective and Of Montreal, Pink’s output is improvisational, experimental, defiantly unconventional even, but a pop heart beats within.
A true individual, Pink’s early releases were recorded at home with just a guitar, keyboard and 8-track, with the drum sounds unbelievably created using nothing more than his mouth and – occasionally – his armpits. With over 500 tracks under his belt, Paw Tracks are playing catch-up: they’ve released three of Pink’s albums so far: The Doldrums, Worn Copy and House Arrest.
Haunted Graffiti is Pink’s five-piece band, featuring members of Beachwood Sparks, Lilys, White Magic and The Samps. On the forthcoming tour, they’ll be playing a mix of both new and familiar material ranging from recent EPs to his three Paw Tracks albums and some of that expansive, unreleased archive material. Get in touch to hear a selection of Pink’s best bits, and expect the next new album of Pink’s twisted genius early 2010.
Ariel Pink was already an accomplished illustrator when he first gained recognition for what had always been his true passion, music. He had been writing and recording songs since age ten and by seventeen had accumulated hundreds of his own cassette recordings. It was during this time, while working in virtual isolation, that Ariel Pink began to develop a cult following in his hometown of Los Angeles and around the world. In 2004, at the behest of New York’s Animal Collective, Pink received his big break and was projected into a much broader arena.
Since then, Pink has been working to assemble a band of musicians to do the near impossible: to recreate the rich sonic universe of his records in a live setting. Finally, he has succeeded in this task; Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti is comprised of accomplished music scene veterans including keyboardist Kenny Gilmore (Lilys), bassist Tim Koh (White Magic, All Night Radio), drummer Jimi Hey (Beachwood Sparks, All Night Radio), and guitarist Cole M. Greif-Neill (Ethnik Klensr, The Samps).

Seventies pop, psychedelic rock, North American FM melodies, confused lo-fi dissonances, drum noises made by mouth... All of this and more go into the music of Ariel Pink, Californian musician who is already being compared to the early Beck and whose “official” debut, “ The Doldrums”, came out on Paw Tracks, Animal Collective’s label. In fact, Pink was the first artist apart from the New York band who signed on that label. The days when he recorded demos in the basement of his house are gone. Or no, as both “House Arrest” and “Sacred Famous” still have that magic spirit and homemade quality which he does so well. After releasing a single on the label Mexican Summer, Pink is currently working on a new album.

PATRICK KELLEHER & the Cybill Shepherds

His forthcoming album on Osaka Records is one of the best things we've heard in a while!
His music varies from brooding, tense electronica to jaunty acoustica to 8-bit dance-floor ditties, but always with a twist of something ethereal or idiosyncratic. His songs are often premised on a mixture of live instrumentation, drum machines, cheapo voice-sampling yamaha keyboards and vocals that are, at times, heavily distorted. Some (perhaps lazy) comparisons could be made with six-foot hairy male Si Schroeder, Montréal-based floozy Owen Pallett/Final Fantasy, with distinct echoes of the beautiful and barking Kate Bush.
He is also a band-member of the pop-drone ensemble Children Under Hoof.
