Showcase festival
Being the largest showcase festival in Europe EuroSonic Noorderslag forms an important platform for new European talent. With the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), Yourope and Network Europe giving extended exposure to the performing artists, the event plays a vital role in the development and circulation of talent in Europe.

Conference
During the conference a key topic at this year’s conference will be the current state of affairs within music distribution of European music in Europe. In “Trans Europe Express Moving music” Vladimir Sucha, Director Culture and Communication DG Education and Culture of the European Commission, together with representatives of Yourope, European Music Office (EMO), European Broadcasting Union (EBU), Impala, IMMF, Buma /Stemra and Clintons UK will present an analysis of the present a string of panels on the state of the European music scene, inviting and suggesting recommendations of what still needs to be done to create a truly, accessible and diverse European music market for European repertoire.

In the panel 20/20 vision the present and future state of a highly volatile music industry will be discussed from two points of view. If our business is to continue to prosper in the most difficult of times, there will presumably need to be a call on a combination of experience and innovation. Four professionals who have worked in various sectors of this business for 20 years or more have been invited to share the floor with four twenty year old relative newcomers intent on making a future in the industry, to discuss where we’ve been, why certain sectors are presently in the mess they’re in, where we’re going and how to get there.

There will also be several keynotes by top professionals such as Steve Knopper, a contributing editor for Rolling Stone Magazine, who is the author of “Appetite for Self-Destruction: The Spectacular Crash of the Record Industry in the Digital Age” will talk about the position of the traditional record industry within the digital age. Alexander Osterwalder, a leading expert in the international field of business model innovation, will also share his knowledge in his key note on Business Models.

Other topics will include ‘How to diminish the trash, the overload of CO2 and human waste at festival areas’, the changing roles of agents in near future in the ‘Agent Panel’, with Ed Beckett (Littlebig, Lucy Dickins (International Talent Booking), William Hann (13 Artists, UK), Robin Sumpton (Luger) and Tom Windish (The Windish Agency) and ‘What can we learn from football’, where marketing director Peter Kentie from the Dutch football team PSV speaks about their marketing concept and about the innovative way the club uses new media and how this can reflect to artists, festivals and venues.

Awards
During EuroSonic Noorderslag developments within the music industry are not only being discussed but also rewarded. With a wide range of awards EuroSonic Noorderslag is the place for both public and business awards. On Wednesday, the European Festival Award show will take place for the first time ever, celebrating the ever-growing strength and diversity of the pan-European music festival marketplace. Thursday evening is devoted to the seventh edition of Europe’s most prestigious award show, the European Border Breakers Awards (EBBA’s). With these awards the European Commission and the European Broadcasting Union aim to highlight European artists who succeed in selling albums and touring outside their home territory. The show will be presented by BBC-legend Jools Holland, attended by Her Royal Highness Princess Máxima of the Netherlands and will contain numerous live performances by this year’s winners.

EuroSonic Noorderslag takes place from 14 to January 16 in Groningen, The Netherlands.
