Power FM – Happy 18th Birthday

One of Ireland’s longest running specialist music radio stations Power FM celebrates 18 years in existence this month, with the first in a series of celebratory events this Bank Holiday Sunday 24th at The Workman’s Club, Dublin.

This Sunday runs over two floors with The Golden Maverick (Static in the Attic show, Mondays 11pm – 1am) and Mark Flood (If It Sounds Like Whiskey, Thursday 5pm – 7pm) honouring the Workman’s long history with a musical doff of their caps to the ballroom dancefloor.

On the first floor looking out onto the Liffey, Joyous Funk ‘n’ Soul, Dave Fields, Gwen DeVita, and Paul Grant all dig in the crates with some of their own Bank Holiday tune selections from 9pm.

Power’s early history took it from Palmerstown to Neilstown, Parnell Square to Parnell St, serving alternative tastes that were not being catered for by many other radio stations or shows elsewhere. Since then, it has continued to diversify supporting new creative talents out of Dublin, around Ireland and internationally.

Music policy has always been generous – house, funk, jungle, reggae, electronic, northern soul, future soul, techno, jazz, avant garde, latin, lo fi, indie, noise, different colours of sound – and the guests that have made it their local port of call have reflected that with everyone from Massive Attack to Alec Empire, Jazzanova to Derrick May dropping in to spin some records, play live or just chat.

Power FM now broadcasts live shows digitally 7 days a week with a 50 strong voluntary DJ roster via www.PowerFM.org. All shows are archived for On Demand “Listen Again” streaming. At present an additional archive of shows from over Power’s earlier history is being compiled for future public access.

Last year Power took to the airwaves in Dublin & Greater Dublin for a successful series of ten consecutive weekends under a temporary licence from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland. Future temporary broadcasts will hopefully follow.
Already available across most mobile platforms, extra app formats are currently in development.
