The Spirit of Voice festival launch party takes place on on Saturday 23 October from 8pm at Johnstons Hall Kinvara Co Galway to announce an exciting song and spoken word schedule for the 7th year of the festival.
Two of Irelands finest musicians, AINDRIAS DE STAIC and TOM PORTMAN will perform to celebrate the forthcoming song and spoken word programme of concerts and workshops
Aindrias de Staic has been described in the media as ‘a captivating yarn-spinner’, but he is also an accomplished musician and actor having won the Best Actor award at the Geelong Film Festival 2006 and The Galway Music Award 2007. His original fiddle playing is as unique to the west of Ireland as his story telling, antics and humour. He will be joined on stage by Estaban Moreno and José to present the band who wowed the crowd at the Electric Picnic conjuring up a hi tempo lively performance.
Supported by talented multi Instrumentalist, Performer, Composer, Songwriter and Music tutor Tom Portman , who specializes in the Acoustic & Electric Guitar and is a pretty Hot Dobro & Lap Steel player
For 3 days from 12th – 14th November the festival features a global selection of musical styles where International bands will join Irish artists to stage a cosmopolitan choice of Vocal Genre Music
On Friday 12 November 8pm at Kellys Bridge Street Galway , features spoken word artist, poet, writer and rapper, Kate Tempest & Sound of Rum from UK bring their innovative rhythm and rhyme to Galway for the first time. Inspired by everything from Wu tang, to Shakespeare and Blake, Coltrane and the Bible, Kate’s visceral style and lyrics at once strike at the immediate truth while providing plenty of deeper symbolism.
Together with guitarist Archie Marsh drummer Ferry Lawrenson and bass player Holly Coyne the Sound of Rum band have increased their popularity after a summer of festival shows and receiving top media reports and public reviews. The group release a new single in November as Kate’s rhythmical verse and groove beats create a hypnotic fresh word up energy
The line up also features 10 storytellers and musicians from Galway’s funky spoken word group the Atlantis Collective as they combine readings to accompanying sound. African rap act the Lucky Crew from Donegal open the night direct from appearing on RTE TV All Ireland talent show.
On Saturday 13 November at 8pm in Kelly’s Galway Brian Deady and band from Cork bring their stage show to Galway, to promote the Cd “Interview”. A soulful blend of dance hall friendly grooves and catchy choruses, which received fantastic media reviews. This debut album planted Brian firmly on the radar and has gained the attention of discerning ears such as Nightmares on Wax and Ashley Beedle.
His own blend of Soul, Pop, Disco, Funk & Doo Wop commutes between influences such Steely Dan, Marvin Gaye and more contemporary artists such as Erykah Badu and Outkast .‘Interview’ is the product of three years work Tracks such as ‘Land On The Moon ‘ and ‘Over Like MacGyver ‘ have worked their way into the hearts of Los Angeles DJ’ s Garth Trinidad and Aaron Byrd on KCRW Radio, while title Track ‘Interview’ has made it’s way into the Heineken USA.’ Holiday playlist download’

Helen Webb who comes from a family of musicians and now specializes in soul, rock blues jazz and all forms of popular and world music. She previously worked as a classical singer in the chorus at Covent Garden and as a concert soloist with Joshua Rifkin. and performed extensively in West End musical shows, and for many years in bands, TV and session recording. It’s a soul party!
Sunday 14th November , at 8pm the festival moves to the Crane Bar Sea Rd Galway for an evening of acoustic sounds from singer songwriters featuring Stacey Nolan who Hotpress described as “uniquely soulful and frankly exquisite vocal styling evocative and heavenly with her music conjuring up thoughts of summer sprinklers and fresh cut green grass”.
Since her debut in 2008 songstress Sophie Coyle ,has been creating a stir with her beautifully crafted and quirky songs as she interweaves stories with laid back acoustic chords that uplift and take the listener to a different era
Galway’s Seamus Ruttledge will be singing a selection of songs from his new album ‘Songs To Have With Your Tea’ and will be accompanied by Michael Durham leader of the Galway Gospel Choir. Some of the songs originated from his book of poetry, ‘The Secret Child’, his first artistic release to the public.

Festival Workshop classes focusing on improving vocal skills feature during the day on Sunday 14 November at Kellys Galway from 12 midday beginning with Mallika McCarthy “the connected voice” A playful exploration of the connection that make up the singing voice, followed at 1pm with Helen Webb “World Singing Space” .Foundation voice technique, improvisation and harmony work. At 3pm Michel Durham “how to master your voice “ Learn Three Tips to change your sound to a fuller, richer tone.
