Estel have temporarily recruited Steve Mackay of The Stooges to the band and together they play a once-off, 3 date Irish tour this weekend.

An active professional musician since the mid sixties, Mackay first found fame as the Funhouse-era sax player for The Stooges (once inspiring Miles Davis to forcefully plug his ears during an NYC gig), then continuing on a long, varied voyage through styles as a member of the Violent Femmes, backing Residents‘ guitarist Snakefinger, collaborating with J Mascis, Mike Watt, Grails, Smegma, Zu and many many more, including nearly the entirety of the musicians from the Radon collective.

Following the Stooges Electric Picnic appearance in 2007, Mackay and bassist Mike Watt teamed up with Dublin underground stalwarts Estel for an impromptu studio session, the results of which were released in 2009 by the band’s own Little Plastic Tapes label in conjunction with the Richter Collective. Since then, Estel and Mackay have remained in close contact, leading to a second studio session recorded in 2008 (due for release in the near future), and this forthcoming short tour across Ireland.

Expect a full set of Estel tracks with some of Mackay’s solo pieces, and maybe a little Stooges thrown in for good measure.

Estel & Steve Mackay play:
19th August – The Roisin Dubh, Galway
20th August – Cyprus Avenue, Cork with Brains, Hooker No.1 & Vomit Nest
21st August – Crawdaddy, Dublin
