ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST
Róisín Dubh 2.0 5th Birthday Weekender

The Róisín Dubh has undergone extensive renovations in the five years since its takeover and reopening by gugai & co, including adding a new bar/ acoustic room upstairs as well as an extremely popular beer garden on the roof. The venue itself has undergone major changes, increasing the capacity to 280, and firmly re-establishing it as the best venue in the West Of Ireland, shortlisted for the IMRO Top Venue In Ireland for 2008, and winning the award for Best Venue In Connaught 2008. In recent times, the Róisín has had visits from the likes of the Violent Femmes, The Fall, We Are Scientists, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Ryan Adams, José Gonzaléz, I’m From Barcelona, Mercury Rev, Battles, Dinosaur Jr, The Lemonheads, Toots & The Maytals, Stars, The Magic Numbers and many more, while also hosting a weekly comedy night at the Laughter Lounge every Wednesday. Other than that, Róisín Dubh is essentially the same as always. The same atmosphere, the same dedicated and courteous bar staff, and the same commitment to bringing the world’s finest music to the West.

To celebrate 5 years, Róisín Dubh are throwing a little party called ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST from May 28th until May 31st. Not only will this shindig feature some of the most popular Irish acts, such as

JAPE – winner of the inaugural Róisín Dubh album of the year in 2004 and the Choice Music award in 2008. Sure, Richie’s practically family now. Melding acoustic and electronic music making, swinging from heartfelt soul searching to black humour, Jape has an amazing lyrical touch, conjuring imagery of human heads, graveyards, apples, plums and petrified forests.

MICK FLANNERY – a longtime Róisín favourite who star has really risen – his last album, White Lies, was a highlight of 2008
MUNDY – Mundy’s latest album Strawberry Blood has returned him to the prominence he enjoyed with hits such as, appropriately enough, Galway Girl, July and Mexico.

THE BLIZZARDS – These lads have been with us since the start and regularly name the Róisín as their favourite venue. Rightly so, of course. A huge army of fans and a rack of radio hits have ensured their continuing popularity.

THE TRACHTENBERG FAMILY SLIDESHOW PLAYERS – The Trachtenberg Family Slideshow Players are the darlings of the indie rock and comedy world. Using vintage slide collections found in estate sales, garage sales and thrift stores the Trachtenberg Family Slideshow Players turn the lives of anonymous strangers into pop-rock musical exposes based on their slides.

FINAL FANTASY in association with Foggy Notions. -Previously known for his startling string arrangements for the Arcade Fire, Owen Pallett aka FINAL FANTASY, stepped out from that monstrous shadow to reveal himself as one of the most important creative entities in the Canadian music boom. He borrows and samples and loops violin into engulfing mini symphonies, sometimes accompanied by drums, harpsichord or organ, and usually with his trusty arts n crafts projectionist specialist setting the mood all around him.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST will also feature club nights in De Burgos from Stevie G & KC, Norman Jay, Gigantic and the Commander and also a pub trail ONCE UPON A TIME BACK THE WEST in The Blue Note, Massimo, Bierhaus & Róisín Dubh with live music from Cuckoo Savante, Breakdown Rambler, Disconauts & No Banjo, and DJ sets from David Kitt, Razor, Noel Phelan, Cian & Cyril (110th St), Tiddlerz (091) & Rory Gaffney, Graham Dolan, Galway Hooker Rotary Club and our very own gugai.
