Music Network presents love:live music – Ireland’s first National Music Day, in association with RTÉ lyric fm on Friday 16 April 2010. The event will celebrate live music with lots of free live music events in cities and towns across the land. Whether you want to perform or simply listen – it’s your day.

Events on the day include:
  • In Dublin, Music Network and RTÉ lyric fm present a free traditional Irish music concert at 8 pm in The Button Factory featuring some of the finest musicians in the land including Slide, a “powerhouse quintet of traditional musicians with attitude” (The Irish Times), Fidil “…three exceptional and ambitious musicians” (The Irish Times) and duo Brendan Begley & Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh performing “…some of the most maddeningly nourishing, elevating and mesmerizing Irish traditional music you’ll hear”, (Irish Echo).
  • In Limerick, Music Network and RTÉ lyric fm present a free concert at St. John’s Church from 2pm featuring “The most gifted young pianist on the scene”, (The Irish Times) Greg Felton and his trio band mates (Cormac O’Brien, double bass, Seán Carpio, drums) who will team up with special guest vocalist Isa Wiss. Also performing are the three exciting young talents of Syrius Trio (Elizabeth Cooney, violin, Jane Cords-O’Hara, cello and Bobby Chen piano), and early music duo Tonos (Róisín O Grady, soprano and Eamon Sweeney, baroque guitar).
  • West Cork Music presents a free concert with the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet who will play a selection of movements from favourite works including Barber’s famous Adagio and the slow movement from Tchaikovsky’s Third Quartet that famously reduced Tolstoy to tears. Both Mozart and Beethoven will make joyful appearances.
  • As part of love:live music RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta will be broadcasting a live concert in Spiddal Co. Galway at 7 p.m. called Féasta Ceoil an Earraigh (which means the Spring Feast of Music), featuring some of the best in music, showcasing in particular Gaeltacht artists. The concert will feature more than twenty acts in total, and will range from traditional music to contemporary, from sean-nós singing to dancing, country and spoken word.
  • Cairde na Cruite (Friends of the Harp) will assemble 24 harpers to perform on the recently opened Samuel Beckett Calatrava-designed 24 string ‘harp’ bridge in Dublin
  • The opening night of Sligo New Music Festival in The Model kicks off with the groundbreaking work of composer Gavin Bryars and one of his greatest works ‘The Sinking of The Titanic’, performed by The Smith Quartet.
  • In Wexford there will be an afternoon performance of Thomas Moore’s melodies by renowned pianist Una Hunt.
  • The Donegal Youth Orchestra will open their rehearsal to the public for love:live music. Hosted by the Co. Donegal VEC music education partnership and the Regional Cultural Centre.
  • Waterford Institute of Technology Choir directed by Bridget Knowles, with Camerata Kilkenny directed from the harpsichord by Malcolm Proud will present a concert performance of Purcell’s great opera Dido and Aeneas in association with Music in Kilkenny, The Camphill Community of Ballytobin and sponsored by Aer Arann
  • The IMRO showcase tour featuring Miracle Bell, Juliet’s Rescue and Seven Days amongst others play in The Late Lounge (Kill), Kildare
  • A 12-hour Music Marathon will take place in the CIT Cork School of Music with students of all ages and levels taking part.
  • 150 children from Lissivigeen National School Killarney will form an instant orchestra of percussion instruments under the capable directorship of Nico Brown
  • The 65 Kitchen Choir will perform a selection of their songs in St. Canice’s Training Centre, Portlaoise, Co. Laois throughout the day
  • The Caravel String Quartet play works by Mozart and Beethoven at the De Valera Library in Ennis, Co. Clare at lunchtime
  • Members of Comhairle na nÓg will workshop with Itchy Feet and perform with The Afresh Band at The Dock Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim
  • Mayo School of Music presents a fun filled day of Musical Performances and Workshops that is free to all
  • In Co. Meath, Dunshaughlin Choral Society will sing a mix of classic and show songs at entrance to Supervalu from 7pm
  • The Waterford Healing Arts Trust is inviting the staff of Waterford Regional Hospital to dust down their musical instruments and warm up their vocal chords for participation in an Open Mic session at lunchtime
  • Composer George Higgs takes to the highways and byways of Dublin on his Joculator – a travelling self-powered composition machine i.e. an adapted bicycle that makes music!
