Karl Blau – Introducing Karl Blau

As for me, it is the dental phobia of albums‘ – Niall McGuirk is not won over by Karl Blau’s 40th album in 20 years

Every new day is a learning experience. A beautiful wonder of life is that somewhere along the way in the course of a 24 hour period you will stumble across something you’ve never seen before. You may hear some trivia about an item that has never touched your radar previously. You may see an event that has never occurred or some never deemed possible.

Karl Blau has picked his 40th record to come up with the title “Introducing Karl Blau” and I feel it has been aimed at me. 40 records in 20 years. Now that is an achievement. He has been on many good labels and has collaborated with some good people from bands like My Morning Jacket and Sunn O))).

And there my good words end.

I have also learned that my irrational fear of going to the dentist has a name: “Fear of Dentist”. Not very imaginative, but it is a thing, you know? Dental phobia is a nicer term. (Don’t worry though, I’ll come back to it, there is relevance.) This whole record reminds me of that song When You’re In Love With A Beautiful Woman by Dr Hook.  It has a clean country twang, and no doubt Nashville is on Karl’s list of 1,000 shows… I’m sure someone, somewhere would like it.

Not to infer anything in any way as this is just for comparison purposes: There are people who vote for far right parties and believe their country belongs solely to them. I don’t understand it, but they exist. This record reminds me of such people. Someones gotta like it. Bella Union care enough to release it, and 40 records over 20 years is some sort of achievement.

As for me, it is the dental phobia of albums. Can’t wait until it’s over, and hopefully I’ll never have to come back here again
