Stars Of The Lid, Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh – National Concert Hall, 9th October

Stars Of The Lid will be joined by Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh for a National Concert Hall show in October

Since forming in 1993, Stars of the Lid (one of the most apropos names in all of music) have scratched out quite a niche for themselves as one of the most influential drone/ambient music projects on Earth.

This Autumn, Stars of the Lid’s Adam Wiltzie and Brian McBride will be hitting the road to debut some new compositions, and some old classics with long time visual collaborator and projectionist Luke Savisky, and German lighting designer MFO.

This tour will feature new band members Bobby Donne from Kranky label-mates Labradford, and Adam’s long time studio collaborator, Francesco Donadello. Also on stage will be A Winged Victory for the Sullen’s string ensemble, the Echo Collective, and a vintage Moog 55 Modular Synthesizer.

Stars of the Lid were selected by independent event producer and Blast First Records founder Paul Smith, who formed a new partnership with Moog Music Inc., to put on a series of concerts with vintage Moog instruments. This is in the spirit of the Moog Concordance that was put on in 2015 at the Barbican in London with the late Keith Emerson, celebrating over 50 years since Dr Robert Moog introduced the world to the Moog modular synthesizer.

Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh makes music on a 10- string fiddle called the hardanger d’amore, and travels the world as a solo musician, in duos with Dan Trueman, Mick O’Brien and Brendan Begley, and as a member of The Gloaming and This is How We Fly. He has performed on some of the most beautiful stages in the world, including the Sydney Opera House, the Royal Albert Hall and the Lincoln Center. He has made twelve recordings to date, ranging from quite traditional to fairly out there, and continues to explore the region where traditional music begins to disintegrate.

  1. what's the ó raghallaigh gonna bring to the party? i know he's on an n.c.h. residency so they need to get bang for their buck, but this jury's out.

I've only seen him live once with David Donohue and it was amazing. Super minimal violin drones and Donohue doing these mad synthesiser/keyboard textures over it. I'm hoping for more of the same.

Indeed, that was a dull set from what I remember. He seems to have disappeared, he was the next big thing in the little world of ambient-y/shoegaze-y type music for a while.

was that supporting Julia Kent? I was at that. I couldn't remember your man's name. The whole set was improvised as far as I know.

I saw him live on his own once (supporting Moonface in that church opposite burdocks). I thought he was very good. I'll certainly be in early to see him anyway.

I saw him upstairs in Whelans about 2 months ago. He was grand. Sold out 2 shows in the one night (one regular time, one late).

i'm not knocking him as a player – he's a class act. seen him do jazz, trad (but not the gloaming). just wondering if he's the best fit for sotl. i'll be in at doors too.
