DANCE YRSELF CLEAN for ELECTRIC PICNIC 2016

Shining like a beacon through the maze of uncertainty, when all roads lead out of town into the darkness of confusion and personal introspection, Electric Picnic 2016 will lead you on to the path of enlightenment. By far the brightest star of the Irish festival firmament guiding lost souls on their quest for musical solace and emotional enrichment Electric Picnic is calling you. As the real stars start to line up for another electrifying year in the heavenly grounds of Stradbally Hall on the weekend of September 2nd – 4th 2016 there is always one thing we can count on – this is one ruling party that’s guaranteed to deliver on its promise of the ultimate musical experience.

The count is in and the first 27 acts on the bill are…

LCD Soundsystem
Lana Del Rey | The Chemical Brothers | New Order
HAIM | Super Furry Animals | Years & Years | Todd Terje
Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats | Animal Collective | Gavin James | Wolf Alice
The Avett Brothers | Wild Beasts | Glass Animals | Jack Garratt | Savages
Pantha Du Prince presents The Triad | Phosphorescent | Broken Social Scene | Ezra Furman
Mount Kimbie DJ Set | Daniel Avery | Blossoms | Aurora
NAO | Girls Names | Meilyr Jones

This is Happening, they are back! With The Long Goodbye of 2011 a distant memory this set is already heralding a shining reunion for LCD Soundsystem in Ireland. Frontman James Murphy is no stranger to Stradbally, having treated festivalgoers to his DJ-set last year, expect to be treated to meaty synth anthems underscored with self-deprecating lyrics delivered in Murphy’s true deadpan style from These North American Scumbags. Don’t forget to bring All *your Friends though!

In her first Irish festival appearance iconic songstress Lana Del Rey will glide onto the mainstage at this year’s Electric Picnic. The Born to Die singer promises an emotive wide-eyed performance of her cinematic ballads. An heirloom of a bygone age, Lana’s twisted fantasies of love and devotion ensure that she is Shades of Cool above the rest.

Global techno dynamos The Chemical Brothers will be returning to Stradbally for a hat-trick performance at this year’s Picnic. The men behind the beats are Ed Simons and Tom Rowlands who together have created a musical powerhouse spanning decades. These electronica veterans will be sure to have Picnickers Go-ing with those Block Rockin’ Beats.

Hoping to banish that Blue Monday feeling after the Picnic are synth pop pioneers New Order. Emerging from the ashes of Joy Division, they firmly established themselves as one of the most defining bands of the 80s, and following last year’s Music Complete album they have cemented themselves as one of music’s greatest innovators. Armed with an extensive back catalogue these trailblazers will be ready to ignite at this year’s Electric Picnic.

Festival darlings, the Californian sister act HAIM are back on Irish shores this summer. The trio have played together since Forever, harmonising R&B tinged percussive pop-rock for decades. Rumours are this year could hold a follow-up to their outstanding debut album which helped them become the first all-female group to win the BBC Sound of 2013 award.

Welsh rock band Super Furry Animals who reformed last year after a five year hiatus added another epic Glastonbury performance to their history, first performing there in 1997. While they had a lengthy break there was no danger that any young chargers could spring up and steal their thunder while they were away. As ever with this five piece, expect inflatable monsters, flamboyant costumes and plenty of Super Furry.. surprises from this irreplaceable act in Stradbally Estate this September.

With some impressive live dates under their belts for such a young act, British electronica trio Years & Years will bring their synth pop sound to acres of Picnickers this September. In 2015, on the heels of winning the prestigious BBC Sound Of award, the Londoners released their debut full-length album Communion and they are definitely ones to watch for 2016.

Norwegian DJ, song writer and producer Todd Terje is no stranger to the fields of Stradbally Hall and is sure to know how to get Picnickers dancing to his hugely popular disco, synth tracks and mixes especially after his epic set in Casa Bacardi in 2012. Once that familiar disco bassline strikes, we’re sure that there will be thousands of wellies busting a move in Stradbally.

Nathaniel David Rateliff & The Nightsweats will be making their Electric Picnic debut this September after a very successful television debut performance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon where the band not only won over Fallon but also gained countless new fans around the globe. Their eponymous debut album puts a unique twist on the indie-soul genre.

Fresh from unveiling their tenth studio album Painting With, Stradbally will be welcoming the Baltimore-bred Animal Collective for their inaugural Picnic performance. The merry men behind My Girls have been morphing experimental pop with unruly vocal harmonies and samples for over a decade.

Gavin James has enjoyed a rapid career assent since his Choice Music Prize Song of the year win in 2013. The Dubliner has soared to magnificent highs both sides of the Atlantic over the last year with appearances on James Corden’s Late Late Show and support slots with Ed Sheeran in the sold out Croke Park along with numerous sold out headline dates in the Olympia Theatre in Dublin. This summer Picnickers will be treated to the singer-songwriter in full flow, fresh from his inaugural European Tour.

Returning to the rolling fields of Stradbally are grunge-pop sensations Wolf Alice. With a rake of NME nominations off the back of their debut album My Love is Cool, the innovative Bros hit-makers promise another energetic show at this year’s Electric Picnic. Picnickers will be treated to heavy progressive guitars offset by lead-singer Ellie Rowsell’s clear-cut wistful vocals.

Promising a hoedown at this year’s Electric Picnic are Americana folk rockers The Avett Brothers. Picknickers will be treated to fraternal harmonies, shredded banjo strings and rousing reflections on love and lonesomeness from the I and Love and You trio. Their slow building bare-boned live performances will be sure to get feet tapping.

Hoping to hit the Picnic’s Sweet Spot this year is English experimental indie-rockers Wild Beasts. The imminent four-piece are known for their emotive falsetto vocals and eerie synths. Tracks like Wonderlust, Mecca and A Simple Beautiful Truth will be sure to get the crowd swooning over the weekend.

Once you hear the hypnotic R&B grooves and cascading electro of Glass Animals you are sure to get swaying. The genre-bending Oxford quartet will be hypnotising the ears of listeners with their intricate sound at this year’s picnic. Listen out for tracks like Hazey and Gooey which are like nothing you’ve heard on your radar before.

Hot off the presses after winning this years BBC Sound of 2016 Jack Garratt will bring his gripping live set to the stages of Stradbally Hall this September. The London based singer/producer/multi-instrumentalist combines electric guitar, drum machines, keyboards, and an R&B friendly falsetto to fashion smooth, club-ready electro pop which is sure to set fans alight after his debut headline Irish date in the Olympia Theatre this March.

The all-female post punk four piece Savages will be bringing their blistering sound and noisy guitars to Electric Picnic this year. Having graced countless iconic stages including Later…With Jools Holland, CMJ and a nomination for the BBC Sound of 2013 award, Savages are sure to own the Stradbally stage.

German techno auteur Pantha Du Prince presents The Triad, which is Hendrik Weber’s first proper studio album since his 2010 breakthrough with Black Noise. Weber has said that The Triad is about human ways of interaction, not digitised ways of interacting like Facebook so our eyes are peeled to see how this is portrayed in Stradbally Estate this September fusing house, techno and indie.

Athens, Georgia resident Matthew Houck is the sole member of Phosphorescent who will be gracing the stages of Electric Picnic this September. With over 650,000 listeners on Spotify monthly he’s sure to draw a crowd.

Known for their energetic performances, the Canadian musical collective Broken Social Scene are no strangers to the stage. Having presented the world with numerous albums full of punchy choruses and cinematic instrumentation they will surely get the most jaded picnickers on their feet this summer.

Lauded for his live performances and musical tenacity is the ever distinctive Ezra Furman. The musical magpie is a collector of 1950s rock n roll, ska-like rhythms and everything in between. Expect to be moved by his set as he lyrically traverses the grey areas surrounding gender issues and mental illness with gusto.

A familiar name to Irish ravers and dance enthusiasts, electronic music duo Mount Kimbie will be bringing their iconic DJ set to Stradbally Estate this September. Mount Kimbie carry over their exploratory production style into their DJing, blending seamlessly between all manner of genres and BPMs. Strap in for the journey!

With his career trajectory heading up, up and away Daniel Avery will be one to watch on many people’s lists this year. Promising crisp production, other-worldly samples and a hypnotic pulse beat, the techno giant will be sure to tickle your hips.

Smack bang in the middle of this year’s BBC’s Sound of Music list is the Manchester five-piece Blossoms. Tuneful guitar pop with hints of the psychedelic are combined with catchy vocal twists by the band that are tipped for the top. Fans of Arctic Monkeys and The Courteeners would do well to get out of the campsite and get along to these guys over the weekend.

You may recognise the feather light falsetto from last year’s John Lewis Christmas ad, her name is Aurora. Her ethereal voice lightens even the darkest aspects of her lyrics while her instrumentation veers from the clarity of synthpop into the emotional depths of folk. Before catching her at this year’s Electric Picnic you can swat up on her debut album All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend which is out later this month.

London singer-songwriter NAO has been tipped for greatness after winning third place at the BBC Sound of 2016. Her falsetto harnesses neo soul and funk and glides it through a wall of synth with ease. Fans of FKA Twigs and MØ, will do well to catch this creative powerhouse before she blows up.

Wowing critics with last year’s Arms Around a Vision album, this summer Girls Names are pushing for greatness. The Belfast outfit is a product of their influences, the atmospherics of Echo and the Bunnymen and the lyrical mysticisms of The Cure combined with the apparent nihilism of Joy Division.

Meilyr Jones spent the best part of a decade as the lead singer with Welsh psychedelic pop outfit Race Horses. Following the break-up of the band and his relationship in 2013 Meilyr took a trip to Rome and from the ashes of these two failed relationships came the premise of his debut solo album entitled 2013. Released last year, Meilyr gathered 30 ‘friends and friends’ of friends’, put everyone in a studio and recorded 12 songs as live some of them in one take. The result is a haunting and unique album which includes field recordings of birds and trombones in a cemetery! Picnickers are in for a treat.

Salty Dog is lurching about in the woods arguing with the shadows behind his resplendent but sea-shy vessel, the Captain’s potty-mouthed port-side manner has won him countless grizzly fag-chewing lady-colleagues, a weakness for turpentine and soda, and a grubby clutch of notes from the 3.20 at Kempton – but not much in the way of a line-up for the festival. As the organiser’s frozen smiles and dwindling patience make themselves apparent, the crew cobble together some names that may or may not be true: Jape? The Rumjacks? Girl Band? Shane MacGowan’s teeth. Cathy Davey?… Meanwhile, the captain lunges behind the sofa, holding aloft a flag which says IN DOG WE TRUST.

Fast becoming a haven for the misfits and gigglers that dream up completely daft and futile creations for the hell of it, Trailer Park’s mobiletropolis grows and grows. A retro futuristic holiday park of caravans, statics, trailers, towers, vehicles, and mobile homes, this is where you come to rediscover why being sensible is overrated.

Back for more we expect David Sumray, whose double decker bus and Mad De-Programming contraption kept Picnickers guessing; and Benny Magennis who balanced a caravan 30ft in the air; the Caravanaoke gents will return with Tow-ho-ho, a Santa-tastic wonderland; Jimmie Lees Juke Joint and an expanded bayou. The ‘My Lovely Horse Paddock’ will feature hee-haws and asses to have a Silent Disco amongst – plus – BIG NEWS – the final of Neil Hannon and Cathy Davey’s search for a Father Ted 20th anniversary ‘Song for Europe’ . We’re hoping to find 20 freshly absurd Art Caravan proprietors – and today announce the closing date for entries – April 24th.

We welcome Dress Well or Die Trying, the new area to pimp yourself festival-proper: life is just too short to dress in browns and greys. Folks who want to join in get all manner of private parties and backstage access to Trailer Park and Salty Dog. Those who don’t, don’t.

Oh. And over 70 bands and other lunatics creating noise. Trailer Park – we’ll bring the playground, you bring you.

Trenchtown transforms the woods of Stradbally into an expansive Tropical getaway… while away the day, sipping on fresh cocktails, sampling the tastiest Caribbean cuisine, play some Dominoes, take part in the African Drum & Dance workshops, explore the island crafts or kick back on the sands of TREASURE BEACH. Along with its music & party atmosphere, Trenchtown packs a cultural experience, a holiday without leaving home, a place to explore, arts, history and so much more!
