I had my work "all hands" last night and we're basically going to be selling hardware to the Five Eyes intelligence agencies.

To say the conflict between my morals and my paycheque is currently strained is a gross understatement.

but then again, all the jobs in Dublin are for silicon valley garbage tech so whatever

I feel this so much, it's something I've been mulling over and going back and forth on the past few months. You know where I work like. I took my job because I needed health insurance and I needed to get out of a hole of medical debt on the back of chronic illness, so I try to keep that as a focal point, but I definitely can't do it forever. 10000% all tech companies are trash, like there's no two ways about it.

In my tech job we're not doing anything terribly nefarious as far as I know and possibly even doing some good but at times but I feel I'd get a better salary wherever you lads work

:( Its so shit you have to do that - but like what other choice do you have? You need to take care of yourself! The only option I see for myself to get out of debt and move forward is to get a job like that too! Or to keep moving upwards in the Civil Service which is hardly a job I'm proud of either... I've had people say weird things to me about where I work and I'm like... Fuck you, I can't survive without a job and this is the only one I got offered.

What's wrong with working for the civil service?

I'd be prouder to be working for the better of the country than simply funnelling cash to millionaires in the US. I'd be prouder not to be working for money at all but my socialist utopia is one step at a time.

There's no shame in working for the civil service. I work for DSP and I'm not a fan of their "customer service" or the culture of looking down on the needy in here, but there are also some things that are admirable. What I mean is I don't exactly feel proud of my job, but I also feel pretty OK with it.

Also, they treat their staff like complete shit and whenever there's an election we have to shove as many people off the live register as possible which I feel is appalling. I don't feel good doing that kind of work. I've been a victim of it myself and it really can fuck you over.

Like, at the moment because of certain politics, there's a massive push to make it look like certain statistics are a certain way in certain areas which means staff moves, people being pushed off the register and onto courses, people's payments being stopped, etc, etc. Its all so some cunt in a suit and tie can spin that he "revamped" a certain area, meanwhile 100s of people's lives have been seriously effected.

Sorry I meant why are people ragging on you over it.

fair!

I can't believe anyone still pays attention to live register bullshit, we all know how the numbers are cooked. Surely that ship sailed for good in the days of jobbridge.

the first 20 odd years of my life was my dad laughing at the radio when department of health stats were read out, "My team wrote those stats, the minister rang us up and told us what he wanted so we added and subtracted details until we got them."

Sounds exactly right! Believe it or not the statistics and particularities of people's live register details are massive and monitored rigorously. They're all categorized and feed into a narrative about certain areas and certain politician's so you better believe there's huge push to get every Joe Soap off their payment and into some horrendous course to make it look like a community is thriving. Some courses are obviously good for people but I'm not comfortable with the idea of people's lives being interfered with when they're vulnerable enough to be on DA or IP.

And yeah, a meeting about an art show recently I had someone say "wow, are you allowed in here!?" as a joke because of my work and me being in the gallery. It made me feel really shit, outside a community (which I already feel) and like I don't have the right to claim I'm a "left of field" artist because of my job. I think I took it too personally (obviously) because I have a chip on my shoulder with artists who have never or rarely had to take a degrading or non ideal job and have no clue of the realities of working class life and act like they're fucking superior just because they've been living out of mummy and daddys pockets and have the funding to pose as "radical"... Ahem... Whoops.

I did 4 years in a social welfare office and I can assure you things were a whole lot worse back in the day. Find some old timers and ask them about what used to happen at 11:30am every Thursday morning.

I've heard some horror stories. We're lucky to have an extremely nice manager on our floor, but its a rarity. Pete, are you the reason the site is unblocked in here!? :D

Ah yes, like all the irish writers whose partners make piles of cash while they sit around chipping away at their novel and being radical on twitter.

It's fine, we'll all get there in the end. Most of our frustrations are internal anyway.

This sounds like the ideal career for me, how can I find one of these foolish benefactors!?
