Prompted by a thread on another board about sketchy gigs. This was the first one I went to.

First punk gig I was ever at was an afternoon byo bring your own in the Old Museum Building in the centre of belfast, about 87,I was 15. I'd been goin to metal gigs for a while but this was all much more"underground".

Anyway,we show up and are blown away, watching bands like Three Ring Psychosis and Pink Turds In Space. Start talking to people and finding out about local bands and whats' going on,just thinking it's the greatest thing ever as we were totally unaware of much outside of Thrasher magazine.

So,eventually,a few skins show up and the atmosphere changes, the skins start drawing swastika's on the wall's and dancing violently, before long it kicks off. Big Time. It was a small room and in the middle was a huge ball of dust with arms and legs and bit's of chairs sticking out, like you see in cartoons only real. And from the sides of the room cider bottles were constantly getting lobbed into it.I wanted to get out as quick as I could but couldn't get past.
The police showed up eventually and managed to break it up. Obviously the gig was over. The skins were escorted away in one direction and the rest of us in another. Unfortunately for me it was in the wrong direction I needed to go in,and for some reason I think I ended up walking home because there was trouble in belfast that day.
I still find it amusing that was my introduction to the punk scene in belfast and that I kept coming back. Regularly walking or skating the 8 miles home after gigs in the afternoon(a lot of the gigs themn were in the afternoon) because there were riots and no buses.
If my ma knew half the time she'd have killed me.

mine was hellbastard in mcgonagles back in 88, sunday afternoon gig. that one was also ruined by skins as well, but i had legged it before the fighting started, the atmos was WAAAYYYY too tense for little young me!!

I was at the belfast Hellbastard gig. I seem to remember Suicidal Tendencies played later that night (and for the record, sucked)at another gig.

gout and brawl in the red loin pub kilkenny.great pub.
the owner tried to make us leave because we were to young
but murt from brawl bought us large bottles of red lemonade
so he had to let us stay.sound out.

great character the owner.wouldn't let brawl sound check until glenroe was over
and another time we went in to ask for a gig he said we could but only if we unloaded a load of chickens for him.

Ripcord, McGonagles, 198?. With The Instigators. I have no recollection of how or why I ended up there.

Residence in either slatterys or fusion bar (one that was down by townsend st) back in 199- 6/7 i guess.

Remember seeing the flyer for it in soundceller and being amazed that there were hardcore bands going here, as I'd mainly being going to metal gigs, and had no idea about this scene.

Ripcord with the Instigators? I remember Ripcord played twice (two consecutive saturdays?) in belfast, and the Instigators playing a few times. But not together.

Prob McGonagles or similar and around '79, Berlin or The Atrix, crappy new wave bands but was fuck all else on...I can't really remember that far back tbh...

The skins must have gotten a battering as there was little trouble from them that I recall after. A few incidents outside art college gigs but that was it.

Stomach, Bambi, Cheapskate and Black Belt Jones in The Attic, 7/12/1996.

Warzone Fest 2003. What a revelation it was! I was mad into metal beforehand, and I still do like the odd bit, but walking into Giro's you could feel the warmth and camaraderie in the air. That's no exaggeration, it jumped out at me. It was so comfortable and welcoming there, unlike metal gigs I'd been to where it was just closed groups of people taking the music a bit too seriously. Got a great introduction to quality vegan food, offers of Buckfast in the street, met some really sound and interesting people, and fairly much went home feeling like I'd discovered something amazing. Which, of course, I had. Also, Knifed were playing when I first walked in, and Mero, clad in boxers and bondage gear, flung Ribena all over me during "Piss On". Ah, the craic.
