‘The plot is stripped to the bone, and it’s all in the execution’ - MacDara Conroy on Lynne Ramsay’s superlative thriller You Were Never Really Here

This is playing here tomorrow - should I go to see it?

Trailer looks ropey, but Phoenix is a genius.

It's in a double bill with Wind River - Renner in the snow. I do like Jeremy Renner, but feel he is one of those great talents lost to the hubris of cinematic mediocrity.

Coincidentally, Renner was initially cast as Freddie in The Master.

I didn't think this was great. It wasn't muck, but the praise seems over the top. Why? Someone tell me. Loved the soundtrack, but what's it all about?

I liked the jarring sound design which worked well in particular with those "thick", dense or oppressively positioned shots of Phoenix walking despairingly through city traffic and on trains. You get a sense of the city on top of him.

The soundtrack was a little uneven though.

Hard to think of anyone but Phoenix playing the lead. Intense as fuck, but then he has everyday, natural quality especially in the scenes with the mother.

Not sure about the ending. The ambiguity could almost be read on a parodic level.

Ramsey's work is never less than cinematic, her pitch or tone may be a little overtweaked. Still, visually rich.
