‘Irish alt country gem......with lyrics that dart around the senses, building delicate, sometimes wilfully vague pictures that hang loosely around Dowling’s plaintive vocals....glorious relaxed sound, dripping with analogue heart’ 4/5 stars, Hot Press

‘thoroughly enjoyable affair from start to finish... blend of laid back American-tinged country rock and folk..... lyrics are wonderfully descriptive.... All in all a fantastic effort’
We Are Noise

‘album of the month.....a gem of an album that is one of the best things I’ve heard in 2012’
5 stars, MRU

‘Wrapping winsome words in a dusty, travel-torn blanket of uncomplicated-yet-alluring melodies all tied loosely together by a sun-bleached bow of intelligent arrangement’
The G-Man

Family Tree was recorded by You Kiss By The Book and Sean Lynch over the course of 2011. The studio was set up in Sean’s house which gave the band a lot of freedom to experiment with different sounds, instruments and arrangements. Although the core of the album was recorded and written by Simon Dowling, Philip Clarke and Andy Walsh, the album features some very special guest musicians such as Fergus Gleeson (James Vincent McMorrow, Feed The Bears), Saileog O’Halloran (Tieranniesaur, Feed The Bears) and David Crean (Villagers).

The album was mixed at Storm Studios(Myles Manley, Filippo Gatti, 24 Broken Amps) by Francesco Gatti and Paul Lynch and mastered by Stephen Quinn at Analog Heart (Cian Nugent, Squarehead, Patrick Kelleher).

You Kiss By The Book was started by Simon Dowling in the hills of California in 2003. Their first album, Neanderthals Going North, was released on a very limited CD run in California before Simon returned home to Dublin where he kept the band name intact and continued gigging. In 2009, Simon Dowling, Philip Clarke, Neassa Doherty and Cian O’Toole recorded the bands second album, Bear Leader, live over the course of a weekend. The album was recorded, mixed and mastered by Steve Fanagan who has worked with the likes of Paul O’Reilly, The Hollows and Goodtime John. Bear Leader was very well received with Nay from Harmless Noise and Peter from 2 U I Bestow naming it in their favourite albums of the year. 2012 has seen the band take the stage with acts like Eleanor Friedberger, Howe Gelb, The Gandhis, Hidden Highways and Mumblin Deaf Ro.

Family Tree is available to buy on CD from Elastic Witch and The Rage. The digital download can be bought on bandcamp.

Support on the night comes from the wonderful Derrick Devine:

Songs that combine the epic with the intimate; hushed acoustic-based numbers mixed with louder, angrier moments.

‘’Devine deserves recognition, pursuing a straight down the line, heartfelt approach with refreshing honesty’’.

‘’Quite an achievement. Beautifully tender. Leaves you with a natural tendency to press play again. And again’’.
