Taught himself 17 instruments, musically (and fashion-wise as well) defined the decade of 84 - 94, revolutionized the way artists are treated by the major labels, refused to participate in USA for Africa because they wouldn't let him play guitar instead of sing (his line went to Huey Lewis), worked with Kate Bush, Mavis Staples and Bootsy Collilns. The defense rests.

How did I forget Mark E Smith.A living ledgeface.

I will never understand the fascination with Prince on Thumped. I just don't get it

surely you like his synth-rockabilly songs?

Delirious
Jack U Off
Sister
Horny Toad

and eh, a bunch of unreleased ones that are less filthy
my favourites are probably Girl O' my Dreams and Broken.

let's just agree that "he's good at what he does"

No-ones mentioned Bob Dylan yet?

or Phil Coulter?

Phil Coulter should be strung up.Reason-congratulations.

Ah but "The Town I loved so well" and The bay City Rollers...

the defense rests

But, can I suggest we don't turn this into a pro and con Phil Coulter thread?

can we not turn it into a prince VS coulter show-down?

why not? You never want to do anything fun in this thread :(

since ngglyyybits isn't around I'm gonna say Paul Weller re: this thread
although I can only vouch for the years 1977-1989

Prince-scorn not his bell bottoms.

Listening to the Jam collection 'Snap' the other day-- its amazing for the first three sides, then it all goes horribly wrong on side 4

Oh and 'Puppet on a String'..fine tune-smithery

wilson
bacharach
macgowan
wonder
newman

i had bacharach on my list...but took it off for lack of his work in my library. wilson...yes. wonder...yes. a.c. newman! BAM! he's astounding really.

macgowan however turns my stomach and i've yet to be moved by anything he's written aside from fairytale and that gorgeous duet with sinead...ghost.
