I'm afraid I can't agree with Socialism.
I want to know more about "the Third Way" that Joseph De Beuys was into around the 70s. Stuff to do with the Free International University. Was the Fluxus movement anything to do with it?

You mean Joseph Beuys.
"During the early 1960s, Düsseldorf developed into an important center for contemporary art and Beuys became acquainted with the experimental work of artists such as Nam June Paik and the Fluxus group, whose public "concerts" brought a new fluidity to the boundaries between literature, music, visual art, performance, and everyday life. Their ideas were a catalyst for Beuys' own performances, which he called "actions," and his evolving ideas about how art could play a wider role in society".

Ah! Must have missed that one... didn't know him and Naim June Paik were linked.... Naim June Paik really has some incredible stuff. His cello pieces are a bit dicey though. I'm interested in this "third way" that emerged from Italy in the seventies. Beuys seems to have been involved in it in some way.... I'm only saying all this coz I saw his stuff in the Guggenheim two days ago and it really interests me....

What am I, your web gofer or something?

"...the Action Third Way, a theory of political activism that Beuys helped to develop in the late 1970s; it argues for an economic system based neither on the values of Western capitalism nor on the monopolies of the state created by 20th-century interpretations of Marxism. One important element of the Third Way is an emphasis on ecology".

There's lots of JB books available. Amazon have a few.

Thanks keeror.... you're a very important person to me.

My issue with Socialism is quite simple. Many of the sentiments behind socialism come from previous belief systems, so I don't see why I need to be a socialist to agree with them. Therefore that just leaves what socialism is trying to achieve.... and I don't agree with what Karl Marx said. Any ideas about an end of history is for disquieting for me.

That's why that Action Third Way interests me.

Billy, if you think that was good in the Guggenheim, you should get to the Beuys room in the Tate Modern. It's one of my favourite places on earth. His stuff in there is just mind blowing. One huge segment of dripped iron suspended by an iron beam in one corner and an array of roughly cut stones in the other. And a slick poster of his Dillinger movie in another room.

HE DE MAN.

Would that include Capitalism?

of course. the state capitalist systems of the USSR (then) and the USA (still) are both forms of socialist principles, in that they revolve around massive state subsidies and investment. both, however, primarily benefit an elite section of society.

you get to a certain point where words become so unreliable that you really have to define terms in order to get anywhere.

I was thinking about this Socialism/Capitalism divide.

The ideals of Capitalism, as spelt out originally by Adam Smith, are not that bad. Naive, but not that bad.

I think a better way of dividing political ideology is a Machiavellian/Utopian divide. The Prince was written in 1513, while Utopia was written and published in 1517.

The Prince was a handbook for governers who wanted to play the system in their favour. It was giving advice on getting the most for yourself.... playing the power/political game. Pretty soul-less stuff it must be said.

Utopia tries to envisage a world which is perfect.... it adheres perfectly to ideals and guidelines and runs like clockwork. However although it does aspire to create a perfect world, it seems to be disenfranchising and almost nightmareish.

I don't think it's a clear either/or division, but, for me, those books represent the main division in political thinking in the Western World...
